They've really gone downhill since ...Arab Strap.
Listening to the newest one for the first time and, while it's not bad, it's quite unspectacular, IMO. Disappointed. Because I heard that it was a major rebound from Fold Your Hands, Child.

Just doesn't hit me the way the first three did.

Oh well.

What's the newest one? I listened to If You're Feeling Sinister this weekend and realized just how much I like it and was wondering if any of their newer stuff was as good. All I've listened to is that one and Fold your hands child....

I am talking about Dear Catastrophe Waitress.
Their best?

Granted, this is only my first listen, but it's jsut kinda leaving me cold.
Maybe it needs a couple more listens.

If You're Feeling Sinister is my favorite.
Although Tigermilk and Arab Atrap are up there too.

Dear Catastrophe Waitress is certainly a different kind of sound from most of their previous material but I think most of the songs are pretty catchy. There's some pretty good 'dual guitar' playing going on some of the tracks.

If you exclude the soundtrack album they put out I honestly don't think they have released anything that was less than good. Fold Your Hands... is much under rated in my opinion.

Take the time and listen to stuff like 'Step Into my Office, Baby' 'Wrapped Up in Books' 'Roy Walker' ' You Don't Send Me' and ' I'm a Cuckoo.' I was skeptical too at first, but after a while I came to love the record.

Wow. Dear Catastrophe's one of my favorite records from 2003 and easily the best B&S record after Sinister. It's certainly their most accomplished, well-written, and well-rounded effort.

No your first impression is correct here. I gave it chance after chance hoping it would grow on me. Its not exactly awful, but I prefer silence over it and I really like the other three B&S albums you mentioned.

i agree with darrin on both counts.

dear catastrophe waitress was in my top 3 (might've been my #1, can't remember) for 2003. it is a different sound than the earlier stuff (which i love even more), but it is awesome nonetheless. you should search out the books ep and take a listen to your cover's blown.

and fold your hands... definitely is much underrated. contains some of my favorite b&s tunes.

Fourthed. Not my absolute fave, that would be Tigermilk, but incredibly enjoyable. I had it before the official release and they actually knocked off one of the better songs "(I Believe in) Travellin' Light". One of my favourite B&S songs ever.

i plead the 5th. solid, catchy, upbeat, as good as any of the highlights of their back catalogue.

My #1 song of last year. That last part still gets me every time.
