From the Flickr photostream description
"Dr. Stock's Platten" - A box of old glass photographic plates purchased at a West Hollywood estate sale in 2005. The plates were made in Germany, but there's a sticker on the box noting that it was purchased in Halsingborg, Sweden, so the photos are likely from there.

There's only a handful, but they are enchanting and sort of upsetting all at the same time.

This is my favorite:

They're all very odd, but I find the shot of the crowd kind of disturbing. It's like a black cloud of evil approaching. There's something sinister about them all, actually.

those are great! love the stairway shot.

agree Dumpjack...very sinister, and dark. Similar [in some ways] to photos that Opeth use for their album covers, which are then of course modified and further destroyed by Travis Smith [the artist].

hello

thanks for pointing these out. they are lovely - i like the vibrancy of the little girl running up the stairs.

why do you find them upsetting? because the people in the images are all gone? because many will have lived through or been lost in various world wars? i'm not so sure i find them sinister - but hindsight and history lends a creepy shadow - because we know what they are about to go through...

The sinister aspect is mainly just a quality in the shades and contrasts. I always find black and whites to have an otherwordly feel to them. Not all of them, of course, but older ones such as this definitely afford a specific, somewhat heavy feeling.

I even looked for potatoes in the pictures.

"... I think you misspelled that.

"It's spelled same as the above, before the word chips."

Elvis Fu to correct my mistaken appraisal of history (since the misspelling was not the fault of Quayle (he was just reading from a notecard (that a teacher had written in error)))... in 3... 2... 1....

It's the light and shadow. I feel like they are being used to lure my attention so someone can club me over the back of the head and take my wallet. Well, it's mostly the shadows. They just seem eerie.
