From today's Variety.
------------------------------------------
In Fox penalty box
Net sweeps out 'Kitchen,' 'Development'

It's not looking good for "Arrested Development""Arrested Development" or frosh laffer "Kitchen Confidential."

Fox has cut back its episode order on the critically admired "Arrested" to just 13 segs, down from 22. Producers of "Kitchen," meanwhile, have been told the show won't be getting a full-season pickup.

More worrisome: Fox is pulling both shows from the schedule, effective immediately. "Arrested" returned from a month's hiatus this week, while "Kitchen""Kitchen" was slated to return Monday.

Instead of the two laffers, Fox will air repeats of drama "Prison Break" in the 8-9 p.m. Monday slot for the rest of the November sweeps. It's presumed "Arrested" and "Kitchen" will return to finish out the remainder of their runs in December. Come January, net has long planned to move "House" into the Monday slot.

Fox wasn't commenting Thursday morning, and for now, nobody's using the word "cancellation." But in the case of "Arrested," the handwriting appears to be on the wall.

While numbers for "Arrested" were underwhelming this week, it's worth noting that a number of returning laffers -- including Fox's "Stacked" -- aren't doing much better.

I don't see why somebody else doesn't pick it up. Like HBO or something, make it like Curb. It seems to fit in with shows like that more than those shitty Fox programs.

The show simply isn't made for regular TV channels. It would do much better on HBO.

HBO might let them do some "racier" storylines, too. Too bad I don't get HBO, though. Damn, I hope that this show gets carried somewhere. The double episodes were awesome.

Scary that War at Home which A) Is horrible horrible horrible and B) See A was picked up for the full season and both AD and KC(which I really liked by the way) are fucked.

I hate Fox. I'd boycott that lame ass station if it wasn't for Prison Break and O.C. I think I'm gonna write my first letter to a network now. hmmmm

It also has to do w/ the return in January of ratings beheamoths "American Idol" and "24".
An article in this week's Ent Weekly looks at how "Prison Break" has been a bigger-than-expected hit and "Bones" keeps on growing in numbers, but those spots go to "Idol" and "24" when they start back up early '06 and Fox doesn't have enough room on its current sked for everything.
Which is a bullshit excuse, of course. EW suggests moving "Prison" to Friday and letting it re-fertilize the now-forsaken night like "X Files" did back in the day.

Now I feel bad for not watching "AD" this season, but Monday is the worst night possible for me. Why this gets tossed (potentially) but God-awful, miles-away-from-funny shit like "The War At Home" sticks around makes me hate TV even more.

At least they put this show on the air. What other broadcast network would put something like this on?

Fox is willing to put good shows on the air, it's just not paying off (I guess).

They're doing better than NBC, though "The Office" and "My Name Is Earl" are probably destined for similar fates as "AD".

This is why I don't watch TV more. I get attached to weird shit that Average Joe Sixpack (who makes up the bulk of viewership) doesn't get and it gets yanked too soon.

Horrible.

DAMN. The best show on tv cut down without even letting it finish the season.

Those last two episodes were fantastic, too. I can't believe this.

I've watched this show religiously from day one, bought both seasons on DVD, and I honestly feel it is the funniest show I've ever seen on TV. I'm going to be goddamn pissed if it gets cancelled.

if it goes, it's done. 21st century fox produces it, so the chances of them producing it for another network are probably very slim. these rumors have been swirling for, what, ever. i can't get down about it.

I'm glad it lasted as long as it did, but this is probably the end. One of my favorite shows of all time can't even get 3 full seasons, yet crap like "Friends" runs for a decade.

My name is Earl consistently places in the Top 30 of the Network ratings, so no, it won't have the same fate. It's a bonafide hit for NBC right now and the only comedy to premier this season to really make it.

The Office just got renewed for the full season. How NBC is going to work this, since they don't appear to have any room in the schedule for it once Scrubs comes back in January, I don't know. I'm glad, however.

From what I've heard, DVD sales are great, up there with many of the most popular shows. AD is done. My roommate told me the other day that the ratings are so dysmal on Monday nights that FOX actually thinks it might be pulling some would-be viewers from Prison Break. They base this on the fact that Prison Break's re-runs shown before new episodes get better ratings than AD in that slot.

It's a great show and I'm sure they'll finish this season (13 episodes at least) one way or anonther. One more reason to watch TV is gone for me, though. Now I just have sports and Lost.

Personally, I think FOX kills most of it's shows by breaking up the seasons so much. Every year the shows start, get put on hold for the baseball playoffs, start up again, get put on hold for the holidays and then finish after the first of the year. It totally breaks up the continuity and momentum of any show.
