Elliot Easton
from The Cars

That guy is a freaking MONSTER. Listen to any of his solos, and they'll tear your face off.

Awesome.

I agree. Probably one of the top 5 left-handed leads in my book. I have a live DVD of the Cars where he just shreds.

Warner Hodges ( Jason And The Scorchers )

If I was to pick one guy from the last 20 years that sez "Rock 'n' Roll" to me, most likely he'd be the pick.

he's considered one of the best, but usually not put on lists - so i'll say Willie Nelson

Two of my favorite guitarists whom I consider underated are Billy Gibbons from ZZ Topp and Mark Knopfler from Dire Straits.

Elliot Easton is a good pick. I've got his solo album from the '80s and it's surprisingly good. Better than the Ocasek solo stuff I've heard.

Also agree with Warner Hodges, but I always put him on any list of top guitarists. Dude's a god.

What about...

Britt Daniel
Chuck Prophet
Karl Precoda

Elliot Easton is a sleeper... they weren't known as a "guitar" band, but damnation that guy could fucking play.

I'll throw one out:

PRINCE.

This thread is like about a million conversations that we've had over the years, ain't it?

Frank Black plays a mean guitar, not so much a shredder, just a really cool rythm player.

Frank's competent, and I mean that in as big a complimentary way as I can. Like Steve Cropper is competent. Just solid.

Prince has no bidness being that good on guitar... he's good enough at other shit.

Definately agree.
But I also have another one one in the Elliot Easton vein:
Chris Difford (Squeeze)

Just listen to his solo on "Is That Love?" and you'll hear what I mean.

Yeah, I wasnt comparing the two. Prince is a stupid good guitar player.

I should mention Jimmy Herring here as well...Much more than your average "jam" player

Yeah, who is this Jimmy Herring guy anyway? I've seen him play with The Black Crowes and last night with Ratdog. I know he played with Phil Lesh and Friends. Anyway he's damn good where the hell did he come from?

Oh yeah Prince is probably one of the greatest guitar players I've ever seen twice.

I first saw Herring in the early 90's playing with Col Bruce Hampton & the Aquarium Rescue Unit (it was Jimmy on guitar, Oteil Burbridge on bass, and Jeff Sipe on drums); actually I think the first time I saw him, he came out with Phish at the Roxy and tore it up on Trey's extra guitar.

He has played with the Allmans, the Dead and a bunch of other peeps.

I was a litle disappointed in their version of "O Holy Night", but what the hey - it's all for charity.

Nice to hear Perry back in there, too.

I suppose this should be another thread.

you don't have to play western rock to be great you know...

I was pretty sure todd was going to say Peter Laughner though

Any one else have Elliott Easton's solo album? I wore that cassette out as a youngster.

edit: np: Bettye Lavette "Souvenirs" (trying to get back in the habit of posting this as everyone should)
