do you not feel that titling songs makes you feel really pretentious?

it drives me nuts. I want the song to have a title but it always makes me feel like I am trying to be something...or faking it....

I just name it what it seems that is should be called.
Sometimes it's obvious, sometimes not. But a song NEEDS a title.

I think it's more pretentions NOT to title your songs --- see Sigur Ros for an example.

Yeah, and don't name it after the damn chorus. Purple Monkey Fart or something is better than that.

i only somewhat agree that songs need titles, but there are exceptions. I think I like songs without names. It lets you listen to the song and hear the words they say without some sort of summed up paraphrase of the artist's intention or just a random picking of say, "Grace Cathedral Park", which has no inherent meaning...it's just random.

I've got the titles, it's just the songs that I'm having a hard time coming up with these days. We should get together.

I prefer the obscurist way of titling songs, rather than utilizing the refrain/chorus, etc. I have a whole series of "numbered" songs...

I think there's also something to be said for avoiding determining conclusions for the listener - I much prefer leaving things open to interpretation, rather than pointing a finger at "the point" of the song. People are smart, they'll figure it out...

I have a friend who writes all instrumental, mostly improvised. He has the coolest titles.

I usually pick a title based on the overall theme of the song, but prefer shorter titles to longer ones. I generally don't like using entire lines of choruses either.

It's gotten out of control. I don't bother learning the names of songs anymore. There's nothing more pretentious than some overly long, vacuous song title conjured up by some cretinous liberal arts major.

If it's important enough to sing over and over in the chorus, there's your title.

Someone (I forget whom, perhaps The Faux) have a song called "Instrumental". It's not an instrumental, and yet the title is perfect, since that's the main word in the chorus.

I leave it to egotistic guitarists to name songs.
