Me and jagged are headed to see My Morning Jacket tonight, and we're both pretty psyched about it...I've been wanting to see these guys since way back in the pre-It Still Moves days when billy g was the only one who knew about them and said they were the best live band he'd ever seen. This should be epic! I'll file a report tomorrow...

i got Just One Thing playing on my ipod right now in the San Jose airport- nice counterbalance to the sweaty mass of tired humanity...makes me feel calm.

i have to disagree with this statement. i give billy g credit for introducing them to the board, but i saw them open for beth orton shortly after they released at dawn.
ok, i'll get off my ridicules BeeOK soapbox now

I stand corrected. But they WERE good, right?

omygod yes. i went straight to the merch table and bought both albums and both ep's that were out at the time...FROM THE BAND THEMSELVES.
also, jim james stood next to us and headnodded through beth orton's set.

seen 'em twice since then, most recently this past halloween. you're gonna love it bob!

Actually, I'm listening to that very halloween show right now.

Yayuh!

Hopefully you'll get the "Seattle" set, not the "Salt Lake" set, Bob. They cut us short in SLC, but played what was probably my favorite show yet (out of 7) three days later in Seattle. I'd expect you'll get the longer set in Dallas. I predict that you're going to love it.

I don't even deserve that much credit as it was via a Chase Mix with a song off Tennessee Fire that I first discovered them although it was seeing them live soon afterward as an opener for Mike Watt that sealed the deal for me.

I was just very vocal about them, but certainly not the only fan nor the first.

Rock gods, man. ROCK. GODS.

What can I say about last night's MMJ show? Here are some words that best describe the experience...

Relentless.
Onslaught.
Shredding.
Jaw-dropping.
Bone-rattling.
Soul-shaking.
Cathartic.
Awestruck.
Tinnitis.

The only downer was that apparently earlier that day a crate full of free tickets made its way to the local Kappa Sig house, because it was wall-to-wall obnoxious fratboy central in the crowd. Lots of marathon make-out sessions interrupted only by the intermittent flashing of devil horns and raising of backlit cell phones in lieu of lighters. I know MMJ now resides on Dave Matthews' record label, but does that mean his fans are contractually required to attend all shows performed by ATO artists?!?

There was a fratboy contingent at the Vancouver show too. Fuckers were in keg party mode, whooping and shouting shit throughout even the quiet moments. I wanted to toss my pint glass at 'em during "Golden".

I guess frat boys are one of the signifiers of a certain level of success, though - and maybe MMJ will be sitting between Linkin Park and Nickelback in their reckid collections.

One of the best live bands I've seen. There was no "frat boy" crowd then. Baton Rouge "frat boy" crowd is more like fake hippy. So MMJ would be between Grateful Dead, Dave Matthews, and Phish. Maybe some Moe mixed in.

There is a similiar phenomenon at Drive By Truckers shows...

so ...

live show >>>> recorded output?

Cause i've tried really hard to get into their albums, but the reverb kills it for me. It just sounds like really bad recordings washed in echo. Drives me nuts.

They actually do a pretty good job of replicating the reverb in their live shows, Phil. But they are just so intense live, I would think you would still enjoy them at a show, despite the presence of reverb.

Far, far better. And I love their recorded output.

Slayed. Absolutely slayed. Only song missing from the set list was "Gideon." They played everything else from Z, except for that song about putting babies in blenders and setting kitties on fire.

They skipped Gideon in SLC as well, but I was lucky enough to catch it in Seattle, and it was fantastic.

I don't understand playing several of those other songs from Z over Gideon----it's the best song on that album.

If not the best, it's damn close.

Never gave this band any attention, anyone want to enlighten me? I know of them and their albums, but have not heard anything by them. Yes, yes I know. Things sometimes slip through the cracks.
