coming back from a break on this Thrashers/Leafs game there was a TH song used as the bumper and the color guy said "Yeah, Tragically Hip--Canada's official band"......

So who is it anyways?

Canada cant claim Neil Young even if was born there. New Pornographers, yeah...shoulda dded them, but arent these polls all about assaulting the pollster for his lack of choices?

The Hip, easy. Playing a Hip song is the quickest way to identify a fellow Canadian.

Case in point: I'm at a wedding a couple of years back. It's a small affair, taking place at an inn in southern ON. The inn is actually one of those large, old converted homes. The bride was one of my best friends from high school, so it's a mini-reunion of sorts. Anyway, they're just playing music and a couple of us are dancing. There's maybe 5 or 6 of us. Then 'New Orleans is Sinking' comes on. And like the miracle of the fishes, it seems like the Canadians are multiplying because the next thing you know the fucking room is PACKED! Like standing room only and everyone is singing and hopping around like madness. I'd never seen anything like it before or since.

The official band.

I've never ever listened to them; are they like the Canadian Tom Petty? (I mean that in a good way)

And this is a brilliant album. Fun and stupid. Reminds me of when I was in first year.

Basically. Are you on AIM? They just released a 'best of' called Yer Favourites, I'll send it your way. I think you'd like them actually.

I still find it amazing that bands like Tragically Hip and Sloan and others can be so big in Canada, yet none of my friends have ever heard of them.

Don't forget The Stampeders, Guess Who, and Red Rider.

Oh, and Ian & Sylvia.

Go Canada.

The Hip never struck a chord with me. Seemed too "samey,' although I have friends that love them.

Is that a real BNL cover? That is like a crazy photoshop contest cover. Absolutely horrible.

I don't what it is that doesn't translate well in the US. I guess one opinion would be "because they suck", but there's got to be more than that because so many of us hosers really love them.

the Guess Who would be a good alternative choice for Canada's band. They also sing one of two songs to name check my current locale.

Neil Young credits Randy Bachmann for teaching him all he needed to know about playing guitar.

Him and Neil do a killer version of Prairie Town

Yeah, I was thinking Neil Young or The Guess Who.

But the Hip and BNL are also good options.

It's hard to pick one to define a country.

I think they're more Stones, than Petty, with a less mannered Bryan Ferry, (only for the warble in Downey's voice), fronting them.

This is one of the very few Canadians, who doesn't have a single one of their albums, and has no desire to get one.

Canada's band = Rush.
