Aside from The Weight and a couple of other popular tracks, I've never listened to The Band, which is a shame I realize (even worse that this is essentially a Canadian band). Hoping to correct this wrong, mcaputo sent me Music From the Big Pink and Bloor sent me The Last Waltz (and The Basement Tapes too). Listening to The Last Waltz is pretty fucking impressive. I read some mixed reviews for some of the performances on this album (Rolling Stone is particularly harsh on everyone in a 1978 review), but I can't say I agree. The Band sounds great live. I haven't heard Rock of Ages, but that's something else I'll have to hear because these songs really seem better live. Mystery Train is fantastic. The Night They Drove Ol' Dixe Down is a standout, it really soars. The other performances, particularly Ronnie Hawkins' Who Do You Love is a goddamn killer. Neil sounds great, despite the legendary cokenose I've read so much about. This is a amazing set.

Songs like "It Makes No Difference" do (make a difference).

Great band, that Band.

I should pull this out for another listen sometime soon based on your and Bloor's praise. I haven't listened to it in a long time, but when I bought it I was pretty disappointed. I have four Band albums, five if you include Basement Tapes, and Last Waltz is by far my least favorite. I love the Band though, so maybe I need to give it another crack.

Glad you like it DJ; this is really one of my favorite albums of all time mainly because the playing is so fucking tight and the horns compliment so well. My fav tracks:

Stage Fright
It Makes No Difference
Caravan (the fucking horn crescendo in this still kills me even after 9,332 listens)
The Night They Drove Ol Dixie Down
The Weight (w/ the Staple Singers....will always remind me of Busty, plus I used to sing a pretty decent Danko)

Also, I cant think of another band besides the Beatles who have three singers that I enjory as much as Helm, Danko, and Manuel.

Just the thought of Richard Manuel cracks me up. Except when I think about him swinging around in that hotel room by his belt.

Dylan and Van the Man singing into the same mike alone would be worth the price of admission...

not to mention the Neil's(Diamond and Young), Muddy Waters, the Clapton, and Dr. John.

Didnt they actually serve the entire crowd Thanksgiving dinner before that show?

Honestly, a show that I cant even imagine being at;

I believe yr right about the dinner thing.

I've got a book somewhere, back home in FL I guess, that describes Van puking his guts out backstage from stage fright, and practically having to be pushed onstage.

lol; I actually heard that he was so nervous that he got absolutely WRECKED and threw up.....He sounds phenomenal IMHO, is wearing a sharp outfit and LEAVES the stage before "Caravan" is over. hilarious.

Robby: "Van the Man. Alright."

As unbelievable as this sounds, 'Brown Eyed Girl' was the first song I heard when I stepped off the plane in Dublin. I was all alone, so I couldn't say what I was thinking: You've GOT to be fucking kidding me.

I heard him every other day I was there. I need to see his performance in the movie.

Or the bit where Clapton drops his pick, and Robby hands him his... you can see it, but you can't hear it.

Even in the dregs, Clapton is competent.

well first, Robbie picks up the line and just shreds......then EC just stands and delivers.

I remember driving around Athens in your Taurus discussing this one in what 1998?

I discovered it through a screening of The LastWaltz on VH1 where Robbie and Scorsesse sucked each other off on their respective genius' between the commercials......

Those dudes fuhed.

And this was in the days before the Bedazzler. Those little sparklies were sewn on by hand.

Dude, the extended footage featuring Ronnie (BASEHEAD) Wood and Ringo "I was so drunk I forgot that I cut an album" Starr is so fucking embarrasing that I refuse to acknowledge its existence.

I mean, isn't this what we have subconsciously based most of our lives on?

YES. Hilariously enough, i got a small bill in the mail today from Uncle Brian and it struck me that its good to have to have lawyer for a friend just in case you ever need to dispute/deny cutting an album, making a baby, or issuing an ill advised memo to your employees.

I mean, just imagine if anyone had VIDEO of our performance to Jamaica and Back? OPEN JAIL>>> I mean, that shit would show up on some kind of fucking after school special documentary on the effects of Krylon or something.

Fuck I wish I had a picture of me walking to Mr. Jimmy's Lorry with scotch in one hand, a balloon in the other, and the seersuck/paisley shirt combo.

Or maybe us at that roadside shack on the way to the Resort, How we avoided an INternational INcedent is beyond me. WAAAY BEYOND ME.'

Yail Bloor, HE BAAAAAAAAAAD!!
