Don't know if anyone posted this yet, but it's pretty evil.

From Pitchfork

Smashing Pumpkins to Fans, Indie Stores: Fuck You
Warning: Excessive greed may cause baldness, artistic impotence

Well, that's the nail in the coffin, then. Just when we were slightly, slightly starting to care about the Smashing Pumpkins again-- what with the release of their long-awaited new album Zeitgeist, and its not-terrible first single, "Tarantula"-- here comes something that makes us more than a bit mellon collie.

Billy and company would like you to know that they fully support the extinction of the American independent record store at the hand of large, faceless, little-guy-crushing big boxes. They also support bleeding their fans dry. How? By releasing FOUR different versions of Zeitgeist.

Best Buy and Target each get a version with an exclusive bonus track. So does iTunes. Like, a different one for each. Everybody else gets the regular version with no bonus tracks. So if you want all of the bonus tracks, you have to buy an album at Best Buy, an album at Target, and an album at iTunes. (Ooh, the presale iTunes version also comes with an extra set of Smashing Pumpkins covers by the Bravery, the Academy Is..., Panic at the Disco, Test Your Reflex, and +44. Ooh.)

Making fans who've been waiting the better part of a decade for new Smashing Pumpkins tunes buy an album several times over is, you know, bullshit. My god, you have to go to Target (and only Target!) to get the version with the title track! That just ain't right.

The Smashing Pumpkins are on tour. Whatever.

Sorry but who fucking buys four versions of the same album? I mean...

Really, who does that?

When you go to buy the fourth version of it the cashier should let you pay for it, take the disc out of the case, smash it, and then stab you in the neck with one of the shards.

I just do not get it. And I like this band. Used to love them, but now that I think about it I haven't listen to an entire song in probably 2 or 3 years (or whenever that was that Bloor and I had a SP FREAK OUT session at 3 or 4 in the morning at Redlands on like a Tuesday).

there should be a name for this... something like the "George Lucas Re-release Effect" or something.

Jeesuz, it's just music.

Anyone who feels they're "made" to do something by a marketing ploy and anyone who's actually "waited a decade" should really get some more sun and rake some leaves or something.

No one has to have every song by frickin' Billy Frickin Corgan.

Music is a business, artists can be assholes, plus I bet this cd really isn't that great.
I personally hate when bands come out of retirement.

oh fucking please, quit fucking whining and just download the record if you want...its not going to matter anyways.

I'm not a huge SP fan anymore but lets not forget that this is the same person who:

1) Gave away the entire last SP album FOR FREE.
2) Donated an entire tour's revenue to charity
3) is allowing videotaping on their entire current tour and kept the ticket prices wayyyy down.

This sounds more like a poor label marketing decision than a group one...

I don't see what the big deal here is...there's albums released EVERY WEEK that are using this method.

Like Dalen said, you want the extra tracks...they're gonna be all over the Web.

Great reminder of why I don't read Pitchfork, though. Buncha whiney little cunts.

Huh? What other album has a different tracklisting at different stores? I know some stores get exclusive stuff, but this is a) different for each store, and b) they're not even bonus tracks. In the versions that have them, they're right in the middle. One of them is the title track!

You realize you effectively just called nearly everyone in this thread the same thing.

I like the drums and the guitar off the first album, that's about it. I could never get into the guy's voice. I do like 1979, sort of. It like creates a reminicient mood, or something.

It is a shitty thing to do. Fans, who the fuck cares about fans. We're going after yuppie hipsters.

Isn't that what this is?

Good on 'em. I hope this pisses of as many people as possible.

Anyone that would be annoyed by any band doing this is a big fucking douche.

I just thought it was interesting. I don't give a fuck about the pumpkins.

As a marketing plan, is the best case scenario that a fan goes out and buys each version? What other reason would they split it up like this?

Wanna know why? THAT'S why.
