sounds KINDA like Wilco's mellower more folky moments, with a twang of Papa M....but more or less it's what you would expect from him and sweeney....in a good way though. A very good way. They're both at the top of their game here, well almost. It's a fahken great record. No one plays this brand of dirty blues like them right now. It's really icey the whole way through. The kinda music you can sit on a rocking chair on your porch swiggin whiskey to at three in the morning whilst contemplating your downward spiral.
Pitchfork said the opening track and first single, My Home Is the Sea, goes a little something like this:

Bonnie "Prince" Billy's most recent releases-- a gussied-up Nashville-rooted greatest hits compilation, creaking lo-fi folk, and Ease Down the Road-- pretty well dashed Palace fanatics' hopes for a return to form. Which makes it that much more refreshing to hear that "My Home is the Sea", the opening track from Superwolf-- Will Oldham's soon-to-be-relesed collaboration with Matt Sweeney-- recalls the best of his recent material while recapturing his earlier gritty blues sound. But the song, perhaps counterintuitively, benefits from a polish and clarity elusive from most of Oldham's pre-Bonnie material, and immediately marks Superwolf as a promising next step in his recording career-- encompassing both his relatively newfound, understated studio sheen and the raw but controlled chaos of Viva Last Blues-era Palace Music. Ê The song opens with a Neil Young-style electric blues riff backing a particularly expressive Oldham melody, one that is gradually embellished with sublime double-tracked harmonies as the song unfurls. "Well I have often said that I would like to be dead/ In a shark's mouth," Oldham sings, subtly recalling I See a Darkness's romanticized ruminations on mortality. The song swells and recedes like the title's ocean imagery defining a nomadic life at sea, cresting during an inspired dual (or, more appropriately, duel) guitar solo with Sweeney, who co-wrote the album's songs before withdrawing for a hushed organ bridge. The song rambles along comfortably, and at nearly six minutes still sounds like it's only getting started. This is Bonnie "Prince" Billy in top form, and an intoxicating reminder of the kind of assured songwriting that has earned Oldham his ever-growing legion of devotees.
