What do you think of Sound Tribe Sector 9? Aren't they yours?

Just saw that they've a NYE gig with Prefuse 73, and fuse was lit in my memory.

I remember seeing them when there just simply Sector 9 (probably around '98) They got really popular, really quick.

Their drummer is/was awesome, but I never really dug them too much. At the time in Athens their were about 18,766 Jam-style bands and they just struck me as another one.

I've never actually heard them (to my knowledge), but most people I know who've heard or seen them seem to hate 'em.

They have a huge local following amongst the jam-band/hippie crowd.

Ditto this. I remember seeing them at the Athens Brewpub around they time they started playing shows and it was always a different line up with a few of the same players. They focused around a groove and added horns and other instrumentation. They were all instrumental at the time.

Since then they have apparently added jazz and electronic elements to their sound. I haven't seen them but they were popular enough to sell out 2 shows at the Tabernacle here in Atl which is pretty impressive despite no radio play whatsoever.

Drinky is right that they are popular among the jam band crowd but they are not a noodling band I don't think. They're popular for the same reason that Herbie Hancock's "Headhunters" is popular among the same crowd. Groove and eclecticism.

Interesting pairing for a show but not too far fetched. Could be good.

They're ok if you like that kind of thing. Much more electronic than other jammy-type bands. And there is much less noodling. I've never seen them, but I have been told that their live shows include a pretty impressive light/laser show that goes with the music.

Their drummer is sick. I loved them when I was heady. Saw them at a strip club in Whistler, and then another time in Vancouver. I have a ridiculous story about the latter show, which I'll impart if you tickle me to mercy, or if I have a moment later.

We put on a few STS9 shows during my concert promotion days in Athens. Always packed and I was always high, so I don't really remember much about the shows. Last time I saw them I got really bored and left....

They are originally from Athens, GA and I think they relocated to Santa Cruz, CA for a while? Are they back in Athens now?

OK. Maybe this belongs in the Things Nobody' Guess About Moi thread.

5 years ago, while living in Victoria, I traveled with a friend to Vancouver to catch STS9 for a second time. We took ecstacy, and I took my shoes off to better dance on the barroom floor. I must have stepped on sliver of glass because my big toe got, like, stingy-itchy underneath. I thought nothing of it, and put my shoes back on. A few days later, my toe ballooned, I couldn't walk, had to get it drained at the clinic, and take antibiotics, which made me fart, and curse my then headiness.

And that my friends, is why I'm allowed to hate hippies. Because I was one. Will always be one.
