 Post subject: how do i ask for a raise if i'm getting a promotion?

according to my co-worker i'm an idiot. when i got promoted from a receptionist they gave me a raise but it was never negotiated. it was a very small raise.

i'm up for another promotion and this time i don't want to mess it up. the hr lady told me that my supervisor asked for my numbers (i guess that means my salary???). anyways, since they already asked the hr lady is it too late to go in and negotiate the raise amount or am i just really stupid and did i just fuck it up...AGAIN? :roll:

it's never too late.

research your field salary online, and see what you're worth. then ask for it plus 2%.

Yea, they obviously like you if they're giving you promotions. I'd ask for it... the worst that will happen is they say no.

Well, sounds like they enjoy pulling the old switcharoo -- tell you what a wonderful job you're doing so you're getting a promotion. As soon as they say that, stop them and ask, "is the raise going to be commensurate with the promotion, or is it going to be like last time, where the promotion was all smoke'n'mirrors to cover up the piddly raise?"

No, seriously, the only way I have found out to negotiate a raise is to threaten to quit. I was never good at that "talky" stuff. How do you negotiate when you got nothing to hold against them?

What's the time frame from the first position to the current one to the proposed new one? Is it less than six months? if they are kicking you up that fast you have more leverage.
