Anyone familiar with his work?
All I know are the songs that are included in the Stiff Records Box (about 6 or so tunes with and without the Blockheads) and I love them all.

Do I really need more?
Is there a good collection out there that any of you recommend?

IF you are not familiar with Ian Dury, you NEED to hear "Swx & Drugs & Rock & Roll". Simply put: a Cockney Rock Classic.

I have New Boots and Panties, and Do It Yourself, and both are worthwhile in my book. Do It Yourself has Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick and other excellent songs, not as raucous and dance-hall influenced as New Boots, but still very good. New Boots has the aforementioned Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll, as well as Wake Up and Make Love Wif Me, and Plaistow Patricia and others. The whole album could be considered a "Cockney Rock classic." I think if you like what you've heard so far you wont go wrong with either album, but New Boots is the acknowledged classic.

Thanks.

You know... between this post and your post in the "Best Of (1996)" thread and your user name... I think you have the most-similar tastes to me of anyone on the board.

So... have you heard Shrimp Boat yet? ;)

You *need* "New Boots And Panties"

There *is* an excellent compilation "Jukebox Dury" that has about half of the aforementioned "NB&P".

He was great, and from what I can gather of your taste, was right up your alley.

I have a compilation -- don't know which one -- and I enjoy pretty much the whole thing.

Hit me...hit me! Two fat persons, click click click, hit me, hit me...

Never heard Shrimp Boat, but I do havetwo albums by The Sea & Cake and like them both. Does this mean that I would be a Shrimp Boat fan.

My tastes generally run the same as Davey whom I shamelessly follow around (metaphorically) like that little dog follows Spike, in the Bugs Bunny cartoon, "because he's so big and strong".

I have a couple of Dury+Blockhead albums but I really dig this. Its a Stiff Record live comp, and its qual. If it wasn't on vinyl I would rip it for you. Definitely worth a listen.

I LOVE the guy. You need a compilation b/c some of the good songs are non-LP. Juke Box Dury was great and all of its cuts were included on a longer Rhino comp 'Sex & Drugs &...' which was out a few years ago but is now out of print. I would find the track list for Juke Box Dury and try to get all those cuts on whatever you can find out there.

I have that vinyl, too!
It is excellent.
And I am sad that I no longer have a working turntable. One of these days I will get a new stereo.

If you can wait a week or two and don't mind a little vinyl snap, crackle, and pop I could burn a comp. LMK.
