Don't know how many of you are fans, but I found this interesting... didn't even know he had a new album out. Anybody heard it?

Wow, nice interview. I can see people who hate pitchfork hating him for similar reasons, though.

I didn't realize Steve Jansen was his brother!

Check out the whole album - it's all that good.

Sylvian's had an amazing career. And his voice seems to just keep getting better and better with age.

You're right... this album is pretty damn good. This sounds like something Dorkestra Phil would like, with the jazz vibe/influence.

Bump.

This album is amazing. It's like a retrospective of a career from a parallel universe.

I have no idea what that means ;)

So, is it kind of a continuation of the somber tones of Dead Bees, or are you saying that it has sounds that harken back to Japan days too? BTW, the real 2-CD career retrospective he put out a few years ago with re-recorded vocals on some of the older stuff and fresh masterings on most of the newer stuff, including quite a bit better sound on the one with Fripp, is very very nice. Has some outtakes from the Dead Bees sessions that are pretty nice too.

Well...you'll just have to hear it then. It's a bit of both, and neither. Most of the disk has a jazzy underpinning that isn't anywhere in the Japan/Rain Tree Crow/solo stuff ouvre, hence the parallel universe comment, but the funky stuff definitely harkens back a way, and there's quite a bit of variety overall (at least, on initial listen -- will be able to tell more with repeated listens -- hey, do you remember that "grower" thread we had, and how do you know if something's going to be a grower? I think this one's going to be a grower), hence the retrospective comment.

And yeah, I liked that real retrospective.

I like the Nine Horses thing a lot. Sylvain and Harold Budd will both be in my top ten this year. It's 1984 all over again.

There was a "Sylvain-related" group called Undark (Russell Mills) that put out a couple cd's five years ago or so. The best music. Does anyone know anything else about them (him)?

Russell Mills had a lot of friends, so they contributed various contributions to various tracks on his two albums, Undark and One Strange Familiar. It's classic em:t stuff, if you're familiar with them (audiophile ambient/electronica label). It goes back and forth between ambient and electronica, and is beautifully recorded, and is definitely above average for the genre.

And don't forget the gorgeous artwork - Russell Mills is as musically talented as he is visually talented. A couple of really interesting albums with an intriguing cast of guests. David Byrne, definitely, a bunch of others. I like the stuff Michael Brook did on those albums a lot, makes me wish Brook would pump out some more solo stuff. Where is that guy, anyway? His last solo thing was the Albino Alligator soundtrack which wasn't so great, unfortunately.

He's done a lot of world-music type collaborations with people like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan on Night Song and Djivan Gasparyan on Black Rock, mostly on the Real World label.
