I've had About Face since I was a senior in high school and still thinks it's a great little, not-much-talked-about album, in the Adrian Belew vein of slyly intelligent pop rock. So he's finally getting around to putting out another solo album:

Pink Floyd's Gilmour gears up for solo album, tour
By Jason MacNeil and Jonathan Cohen
Mon Dec 12

TORONTO/NEW YORK (Billboard) - Pink Floyd singer/guitarist David Gilmour will begin his first solo tour in decades March 10 in Dortmund, Germany, in support of his upcoming solo album, "On an Island." Although North American dates have yet to be confirmed, Gilmour is expected to visit the region in April.

Due March 6 via Columbia, "On an Island" is Gilmour's first solo release since 1984's "About Face." The set is packed with guest appearances from David Crosby and Graham Nash on the title cut, Pink Floyd keyboardist Rick Wright, Robert Wyatt, Roxy Music's Phil Manzanera and Jools Holland.

Manzanera serves as a co-producer on the set with Gilmour and Chris Thomas. Orchestral arrangements were provided by composer Zbigniew Preisner.

In related news, Sony Music has bumped the release of Pink Floyd's "Pulse" DVD to January 31. The project, which chronicles Pink Floyd's final tour in 1994, was originally slated to arrive last week.

Snazzy.

About Face is better than the last 2 Floyds.

It's got some dated 80's production here and there but great hooks and memorably personal lyrics. It's not deep or arty, but there's tunes on it I haven't ever stopped liking.

I dig David Gilmour, but I like his first solo album and the two Pink Floyd albums better than About Face, so I anticipate with reservations.

Yes. His solo tunes, the more sardonic, poppier ones have a similar mindset and tone to many of those on About Face. Play Mr. Music Head and About Face back to back and you can hear it.

I was a Belew fan thru Twang Bar King and Lone Rhino, and after that, he lost me. That shit don't sound nothin' like Gilmour/Floyd to me. I wouldn't be able to compare it to Mr. Music Head.

After Desire Caught By The Tail, he changed directions entirely with Mr. Musichead and Young Lions -- much more song-oriented.

I don't hear it either.

Belew fans, especially of his more difficult work, are highly encouraged to pick up Side One and Side Two, which are quickly becoming my favorite albums of his. Op Zop Too Wah gets a lot of attention from me, too. (And his post Desire albums did absolutely nothing for me, if that helps to tell you where I'm coming from.)
