What else are you listening to these days?

Isn't Spinning Plates, Davey? I know it's one of the down under boys.

Uh oh, so much for my stealthy entry into the land of the CMJ exiles

Other things in rotation lately that I like alot are some of the big hype indie stuff like Fiery Furnaces and Arcade Fire, but also love the new ones from David Kilgour and The Court & Spark and Vetiver and the Honeydogs and especially the latest from the Old Canes and double especially the new EP from the National called Cherry Tree. Wow, I do love this one. It's just 7 songs with about 28 1/2 minutes of music. The first 5 songs are new and one is a live version of a song from the last LP and one is performed mainly by Australian labelmate and avant garde composer/performer Padma Newsome who is also a sometime member of the band. If you like Interpol and the Tindersticks and Willard Grant Conspiracy (and by extension Joy Division, Nick Cave, Scott Walker, Tom Waits, The Smiths, Johnny Cash, Leonard Cohen, etc, etc) then these guys from Brooklyn via Ohio might become one of your favorite new bands. They are one of mine. Beautiful CD that I've been playing over and over for about the last month or so.

First newb, eh? Cool 8)

I checked Cherry Tree on amazon and it sounds pretty good.

Me? I'm in the part that moved to northern California. Hehehe, the band known as the National is originally from Ohio, but not me. I am originally from Missouri, though. Does that count?

Yeah, I do love the new Frozen Orange. A friend of mine from New Zealand just recently sent me a copy of Here Come The Cars and the Cracks in the Sidewalk EP so think that might complete my collection except for the one called First Steps & False Alarms in 1995 which he doesn't have. It's all great stuff. A shame it isn't more widely available in the US except for the last two. That 1997 release titled David Kilgour & the Heavy Eights is a real treasure, maybe the best he's done overall. But the new one is so good too. Hard to pick a favorite, especially since A Feather In The Engine has also grown to be essential listening for me. I recently put together a compilation for a friend and it's nearly 80 minutes of pure bliss. Kilgour is definitely one of the good guys.

NP: Gang of Four - Entertainment! (1995 EMI remaster) time to get the evening kick-started!

or is this some sort of spontaneous generation?

Damn, and I originally misread "noob" as "nood". Utterly disappointed.

I got the Cherry Tree EP a few months ago and there are some amazing songs on it. I should probably pick up the last album, since I have the first and this EP.

Clowns are kinda scary, huh? Just for you pumachik, I'll ditch the Sparklehorse clown and become the guy from Blur. Howza about that?

Ya know, I don't think I'd wanna meet that pumachik avatar in my dreams either 8)

Welcome, Davey!

...and maybe we can point non-CMJ noobs to introduce themselves here and welcome them.
