What can I say? Christmas is coming and we all need cash.

Wish me luck, or say a prayer. Hope i don't run into any schmucks today.

If you want, i'll let you know how it went sometime after 3.

Ahhh, how we used to terrorize the substitute teachers. Fond memories.

I'd suggest that you go try subbing out for a few days, then. Grab you a little junior high. Reap...Sow...Repeat.

I've made it near impossible for my students to win against the subs. Here is my substitute policy...

If the students misbehave in the subs opinion (it has to be something solid, not just "they looked at me funny" crap, the substitute writes their name(s) down... if the students refuse to give their names, the whole class gets the following punishments....

1.) They own me/the sub/the school/the administration/their parents/their ancestors/ and society as a whole a 10 page letter of apology. Typed, 1 & 1/2 spaced 10 point font. they will not be allowed back into class until it is completed. Any work they miss during that time will not be allowed to be made up.

2.) We have to have a conference between me, them, their administrator, their councilor, and a parent/guardian to determine if we should let you back in my class.

3.) An automatic loss of 15% off the next test

I've had to use it once in my 10 years of teaching, and the parents of that child thought It was a great idea - she was a real bee-yotch, but her parents weren't.

We used to only terrorize the sub only if we hated the regular teacher they were subbing for. It was like we treated the sub how we wanted to treat the teacher, so if we liked our regular teacher the sub got a pass. You liked your teacher you wanted to act good for the sub.

THE TEACHERS ARE AFRAID OF THE PUPILS

There's too many people
planning your downfall
when your spirit's on trial
these nights can be frightning
sleep transports sadness
to some other mid-brain
but somebody here
will not be here next year
so you stand by the board
full of fear and intention
if you think that they're listening
well you've got to be joking
oh you understand change
and you think it's essential
but when your profession
is humiliation

Actually, I don't rule hard at all. Just ask Katie, A Princess, she witnessed the insanity that was my "teaching style".

I just started out as a substitute, and decided they don't get enough respect.

I don't have a seating chart, I don't bother too much with tardies or attendance, I don't do discipline referals, I allow food and drink, I allow them to go to their lockers, to the bathroom or the vending machines pretty liberally, I allow them to disagree and to talk back if i'm too full of shite, and I actively encourage them to own and define the classroom and their education and not let me own or define it.

BUT THE SUB IS NOT ME, and they cannot forget that. My sub policy won't let them forget it.[/b]

my kids are four grades apart and they've had a lot of the same subs. to my surprise there are a few--a few--subs they look forward to getting.

on the other had my son (6th grade) had a sub for two days last week and it sounds like he was a little high strung and wrote up a bunch of kids for messing around. my son was written up for running around the room playing tag with some other kid when it was actually another kid who was doing it. mistaken identity. i get it. of course, my son won't narc the kid out (i'm proud) and will have something sent home.

i cross examined him last night and said he won't get in trouble for the note home from us but if he was ever busted disrespecting anyone--teacher or student--or being purposefully mean or just an asshole in general there'd be a price to pay. he gets it. i told him i can't begin to defend him unless he tells me the truth.

he's a good kid and has openly confessed to being sent to the principal's office in elementary school or put in time out or whatever. we never would have known so i'm going to continue to trust him until he gives me a reason not to.

subbing just must be a bitch.

Kindergarten today. Incredibly cute. Incredibly tiresome.

What i don't get is they had an opening for a music sub today, and they passed it to some old ex-vice principal of a sub when they actually had a music teacher there who could follow the lesson plans.

Whatever.

They asked me to sub at the same school tomorrow, 4th grade.

Rock.

Thanks for the well wishes, prayers, and funny posts. Jeff, I'm coming to sub for you dude.

I would like to echo the Phil rules sentiment of this thread.

I would also like to add a dancing banana, dancing monkey and dancing lock to it.

Wow, subbing at a nice school makes all the difference.

If i had a kid, i wouldn't mind sending them there.

So they asked me back again, tomorrow, 5th grade. Three days in a row at a nice school.

Sweet.
