another great article on it.

one's first reaction to this is clear channel is right wing. not necessarily true. clear channel are capitalists -- and good ones at that. although they've adopted fox news programming, they've also spearheaded the effort to expand air america, the left-wing talk network.

they're kinda like american apparel. american apparel found their niche and are banking off of it. american apparel doesn't care if they exploit workers or not. but they care that other people care. since there was a demographic of people willing to drop a few more bucks for already over-priced t-shirts in order to be or appear to be 'socially conscious' then exploit that. cc doesn't care about fox (except for the bank) or air america or expanding content or whatever. they want what the majority wants because that's how you get rich. they believe there's enough subscribed left-wingers to make air america profitable -- that's yet to be proven. its obvious that americans like to hear news that's slanted in their direction, whether fox-ward or a.a.-ward. personally, i think there's too much conflict of interest for me to consider any cc station's news to be legit (as if i did before). it is what it is -- a potentially profitable move, with little intention of covering more local issues.

i don't think the fact that a company pulls bank because they appeal to someone's values means they "don't care." it could very well be that american apparel had to overcome difficult hurdles to bring their product to market at (what really are) fairly competetive prices. their bottom line doesn't depend on whether they care, but that doesn't mean that they don't.

small point, but worth saying.

you're right for saying so. in the interviews ive read from him, he approaches sweatshop-free as good business. to me, it's like when cc cut their commercial spot-loads, practically claiming charity work for cutting down their 20-minutes-an-hour of commercials to 12 minutes. what they're hoping it means is good business. it wasn't charity -- but consumers are more happy listening to a station with less commercials and the advertisers like listeners who hear their ads (esp. ads that have good placement). american apparel knows good business is making people feel good about their purchases. they're hitting on a niche that's extrememly profitable. people feel goo dhearing their points of view resonating on fox. cc wants to make thier listeners happy. as i said, it is what it is.

an interesting story on a.a.
