Got back about 30 min. ago from seeing a band called Entrance at The Basement here in Nashville. I went on a whim based on the fact that he'd (Guy Blakeslee) toured with Devendra Banhart and Cat Power. So, I was expecting some sort of low-fi folk rock, but what I got was an similar to the following. This is the best description I could conjure:

If Nick Cave was filtered through a late 60's acid-blues duo that never existed but was born in 2004 through the ex-bass player of Convocation Of... exploring the Delta blues. Reverbed Tim Buckley-ish vocals, Velvet Underground plodding/slow-core/minimal drumming, and weird-ass chord changes due to playing a flipped-over Strat left-handed.

I'm so glad I saw this band. Right up my alley. Their newest record, Wandering Stranger is out on Fat Possum. From what I've heard of it, it sounds more like a "blues" record than what I saw/heard tonight.

A quote from Guy about what he hopes a live crowd will see: “I remind myself every night to present a glimpse of something crazy, fucked up, and real.”

mfd, in case you read this, they'll be in Raleigh @ Bickett Gallery on Saturday night. I highly recommend it.

Yeah, he was the bassist for The Convocation Of... I can't recommend the album, as I've only heard a couple of tracks, but his live show is great.

was he in moss icon before that? i think that's what got me interested... i'd definitely go see'em live if given half a chance. that dfa 1979 show was great btw, or at least they were great.

I wondered what DFA1979 would be like.... Was it more rawkus or polished? Glad you enjoyed it.

So I didn't make it out to Entrance on Saturday. Kind of recovering from the night before. Thanks for the heads up anyways.

You're lack of dedication to music disappoints me.

man, I've been meaning to pick up that first record (on tigerstyle?) for a long time - i just never remember to look for it. now there are two. which is better?

those two convocation of... records are awesome. tonie joy's guitar is so heavy, so spooky, and a sound all his own (from universal order of armageddon, lava, the great unraveling, moss icon and sometimes men's recovery project).

Entrance has a track on the eye-opening Golden Apples of the Sun comp. Anything on that collection is worth pursuing, if you ask me. "You Must Turn" is a languid, ethereal piano dirge that hints at interesting things going on with this band. Too short to tell for sure. I'll trust Stu and download there stuff first chance I get. Sorry, kids, the funds don't exist.

Now, how is the band name pronounced? Is it enTRANCE or ENtrance?
