I had friends who began waiting in line at 5am, 6am, staggered hours throughout the day. Not me, I had to work and bring home the bacon in order to afford other shows to go to. I showed up around 5:45pm with a friend saving me a spot in line (he drove from Arizona and had been waiting since 12:30pm). People were offering ridiculous amounts of money to get in -- saw a dude carrying a sign stating that he'd pay $200 for a ticket. Underaged skanky girls that I often see at shows were following older, pervy looking bastards, hoping to get free tickets if they offer up a quick cock suck. A couple who attend a lot of the same shows I do had been waiting since 10am trying to score tickets. I never saw them inside and can only assume they never got in. It was caaaah-razy.

After letting us in sometime after 8pm, we staked our places in front of the stage. No center stage for us tonight. Oh hell no! We knew a mob would form and render us pummeled and bruised by the end of the night. People quickly filled the place. Hey, whoa, who's that? Ohhh, it's Keanu Reeves! What? No Drew Barrymore? Isn't she still dating Fabrizio? Eh...dunno.

No opening act. Yay!

Band takes the stage sometime around 9:15pm and open immediately with "Juicebox". It's loud. It's got the audience bouncing. We're rockin'. The audience's response is deafening when the song is over with. I'm smiling, my friends are smiling -- the whole place has donned fuckin' cheesy grins. They performed a fantastic mixture of new and old songs -- about 18-20 in total. One encore. In my opinion, Julian's vocals could've been louder, but damn if they didn't sound tight.

It was my first time seeing The Strokes and am extremely glad that I was able to experience them at my favourite venue. A small one. Just a couple hundred of my closest friends and me. I couldn't have asked for a better place.

And guess what? They were selling the new album (limited version) for $9.99 AND I received a bonus 7" of "Juicebox" with it. Nice lil' bonus for an eleven buck purchase. I'm tellin' ya, I definitely walked out a winner tonight.

Awesome.

That sounds like a blast, T. Glad they stayed sober enough (though I guess I read somewhere that Julian has quit drinking....meh) to bust out a good set.

Here's NME's review:

Quote:
The Strokes play tiny club show
Band celebrate the release of 'First Impressions Of Earth'
The Strokes have celebrated the US release of their third album 'First Impressions Of Earth' by playing an exclusive gig at Los Angeles Troubadour last night (January 6) for 500 fans and A-list stars.

Following in the tradition of Radiohead, who launched 'OK Computer' there in 1997, and Coldplay, who premiered 'X&Y' with a low-key gig at the legendary venue, The Strokes show drew massive queues around the block.

Hundreds of fans who won tickets through local radio station KROQ turned up hours early to secure places at the front of the stage, while still more arrived begging list holders to sell any spare tickets for upwards of $500 a piece.

Inside, the band took the stage about forty five minutes late, with celebrity onlookers cheering them on including Matrix star Keanu Reeves as well as actresses Kirsten Dunst, Eva Mendes and Drew Barrymore.

The balcony was packed with stars from the music scene too including Beastie Boy Mike D, Jet's Chris Cester and man about town, Har Mar Superstar.

"Thanks to everyone inside," frontman Julian Casablancas told the sweaty patrons upon taking the stage. "Are you guys ready to go or what? This is one of the best days in the world. God Bless America."

The New York outfit opened with 'Juicebox', following it up with a thirteen song set that included new ones 'Razorblade' and 'Red Light' alongside classics 'Someday' and 'Hard to Explain'.

Midway through the band's seventy five minute set the crowd erupted as the band introduced 'Last Nite'. One fan was so moved she climbed the venue's scaffolding several feet above the crowd, where she swung around the metal pillar until security pulled her down. Another fan climbed on stage to dance alongside the band, who paid him no attention, until bouncers kicked him off.

The show ended with a three song encore beginning with 'New York City Cops' followed by 'Soma', before finishing with 'Take it or Leave It'.

'First Impressions Of Earth' is set to enter the UK albums chart at Number One tomorrow (January 8).

The fan referenced who climbed the scaffolding was a...erm...'big' girl wearing a very mini skirt, black boots and fishnet thigh stockings. She was also wearing a thong (at first, I thought she had nothing on underneath) and pretty much gave everyone a free show to the audience as she performed her pole dance on the scaffold.

For anyone interested my amatuerish prose has been bashed into something, barely, resembling a 'review' of the new Strokes album.

It currently resides, ill at ease, in the Review section of Obner.

i couldn't disagree more with your comment "it's a step down in quality", and your rating of the album. other than that, a well written review Darrin.

Glad you had fun.

The band is on the front cover of the January 16th issue of New York magazine.
