Arcade Fire have been hyped waaay more than Bloc Party & AM's.

In those 3 cases though, I'd say they're very worthy of the hype.

i know i am going to get slammed for this...but the most over hyped band is radiohead.....

keep in mind the bends + ok computer are easily in my top albums from all time......

but they have totally lost me after that.....

if radiohead shit in a bag and sold it...people would buy it + it would get hyped al over the place saying how great it was.

hyped but not becuase they had a big expensive promotion campaign -- you can just blame all the press for loving them. bloc party had a ton of money and pr machinery behind them.

I think Franz Ferdinand has an exorbitant amount of hype.

People complain a lot about hype but its nothing like as bad as it used to be 10 or 15 years ago, mainly, it has to be said, because there are a lot less music papers and magazine around today than there were back in the 90's.

Probably the biggest hype campaign I can remember was Suede. They were selling out medium sized venues before they had even released a single and this was long before you could download leaked material on the internet.

Incidentally I loved Suede (at least while Bernard Butler was in the band) so it was an early lesson in life not to dismiss things just because of the over excessive media involvement.

How many of you, honestly, give negative reviews/opinions because of the glowing praise bestowed upon some artists. I don't mean that as a snide comment, because I think it's somewhat understandable to get turned off after hearing over and over how brilliant said artist is or does it tend to be more of a let-down phenomenon, where you hear the artist and you wondering what the fuck the big deal is, so you tend to piss on it.

I'm just wondering if so much of it is burnout. For instance, I'm listening to the Arctic Monkeys right now and aside from a few posts by Dalen, I've never heard of the band. I think this is a good album, so far, I'm really enjoying it. Had I received an inordinate amount exposure to the hype, I wonder if I would be let down, expecting more from it.

On the smaller scale, I'd go with LCD soundsystem between here, pitchfork, and the rest. Not up to the hype and the reviews at all.

I didn't listen to Arcade Fire for awhile because of all the hype, even though I'd heard their ep before it all started and really liked that Headlights Look Like Diamonds song.

Wolf Parade seem to be getting a lot of press, though having not heard the full album I can't say whether that's justified or not

And Jet were massively overhyped and overexposed, even before their album was released. Not looking forward to round 2 this year

and in the last couple of months Wolfmother have been eveywhere here. I'l freely admit to backlash becuase I'm sick of hearing about how great they are

I don't see how it's even remotely possible that Arctic Monkeys are overhyped when I've never heard or read a single word about them outside of this thread.

Now Arcade Fire and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, THOSE are overhyped. Neither of them particularly noteworthy but people act like Talking Heads and the 80s in general never happened. I'm getting old - not only do I hear the inspiration for all these "great" and "groundbreaking" new acts, I can't stand the thought of listening to them over the originals. Give me XTC and Talking Heads any day over AF and CYHSY.

Keep in mind petecockroach is on my side of the pond. I haven't been up to speed on UK media, but I would guess the media machines are different and don't talk much. While four Arcade Fire singles charted over here, I still don't think the hype matches up to North American press.
