VNU Net article

Love the archival "hippy" pic they use of Fripp -- just makes it seem that much more anachronistic.

This is a great quote.

Fripp should be ashamed of himself.

Yeah, but what Microsoft doesn't count on is that each sound they request will be 15 minutes long, half of which is silence, which he insists must be there in order for the muse to properly filter down through the ether to his fingertips.

Love King Crimson, even love Fripp and his soundscapes, but his new-agey tendencies have a tendency to get really embarassing, like not being able to play when a photograph is taken, or "sensing" that the "spirt of the performance" is being sapped because a bootleg-recording is taking place in the audience when the band plays live. That said, head over to http://www.dgmlive.com/ and purchase/download some incredible official bootlegs.

Yeah, really. The headline is everything they have to say about the present, and then they go back and spend the rest of the article talking about Eno.

Why? It's not like most Windows users will ever be aware of who is making the music. He's probably going to get paid a lot of money for very little work that will have no effect on his actual musical career - he just has more money to invest in what he loves. I'm all for it.

Going by this, shouldn't Eno be ashamed of himself, too? Does that mean you discount Eno because he created 3 seconds of sound for Microsoft? People need to get over this "selling out" thing - these are not household-name musicians. They're real, working musicians who need to do what they do to get money so they can keep doing what they really love.

Did he really? I've never heard that. I have actually learned something today.

Even if Eno's solo stuff wasn't selling (which it is), he got paid from Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby. I don't think he's sweatin'. Unless maybe his mansion in Venice needs a fourth story.

If anything, Eno had some interesting things to say about his experience working on the Windows 95 start-up sound. I found the paragraphs below on Wikipedia.

---

The idea came up at the time when I was completely bereft of ideas. I'd been working on my own music for a while and was quite lost, actually. And I really appreciated someone coming along and saying, "Here's a specific problem – solve it." The thing from the agency said, "We want a piece of music that is inspiring, universal, blah-blah, da-da-da, optimistic, futuristic, sentimental, emotional," this whole list of adjectives, and then at the bottom it said "and it must be 3 1/4 seconds long."

I thought this was so funny and an amazing thought to actually try to make a little piece of music. It's like making a tiny little jewel. In fact, I made 84 pieces. I got completely into this world of tiny, tiny little pieces of music. I was so sensitive to microseconds at the end of this that it really broke a logjam in my own work. Then when I'd finished that and I went back to working with pieces that were like three minutes long, it seemed like oceans of time.

Well, it was still funny. Although it would have been more believable if you'd said Eno.

Agree. Thought though with the Fripp thread it might pass for validity.

Dammit, well then I haven't learned anything today. What the hell am I going to do now?

it was actually mike post. he sampled a jail cell closing and mixed in a few other random sounds to create it. (i can't seem to find anything about what those other sounds are, though.)
