Me and a friend were talking about who had the best voice in rock and I was wondering what you guys thought. In my opinion Kurt Cobain had the best voice in rock (If you don't believe me listen to the last 30 seconds of where did you sleep last night on the unplugged in NYC disk)

Depends how you define "Rock"
I mean, does Sam Cooke qualify?

If you're being more strict (Hard rock), I'm going with Robin Zander (Cheap Trick).

It's all an opinion thing....

while the last 30 seconds of "WDYSLN" was hair on the back of the neck chill inducing, I think it was more of a intense beautiful 'moment', then a sign of a great singer.....The actual kicker was the band kicking back into the end of the song, after Kurt's little yelp.

Dio

Yeah the imagery is goofy, and the guys a dwarf, but man can he belt out the metal anthem.

Halford's not too far behind, his high register shennanigans in "Victim Of Changes" is mind-boggling.

"Best" and "rock" are both pretty vague qualifications. "Favorite" is probably more accurate.

My favorites:

Peter Gabriel
Jeff Buckley
Steve Hogarth
Rufus Wainwright
Freddy Mercury

I'm sure there are many more, I just can't think of them at the moment (and I left my Ipod at home (dammit!))

I'm just gonna throw these out there. If you like em you can take em, if not you can send them right back...

John Lennon (even though Paul could sing circles around him, Lennon had better taste = my choice)
Jim Morrison
Roger Waters
Robert Smith
Bernard Summer
David Gahan
young Trent Reznor
Maynard James Keenan
young David Bowie
young Sting

i'd better mention Thom Y. though I'd like to hear at least one post Bends song where he's not trying to reinvent the castratti...

Neko Case anyone? Or are girls not allowed in this discussion?

I actually think Julian Casablanca has a great rock voice when he actually rouses himself.

My personal favorites are:
Thom Yorke and Jeff Buckley for the falsetto
David Bowie
M Ward and Tom Waits for the gravely soulful voice
Ian Curtis and Paul Banks for the monotone Baritone
Robert Smith
Bryan Ferry for the Cabaret style
