So, I saw this just got reissued and I'd always heard really good things about this album. I was thinking I might pick this up tonight, but have enough crappy albums by them to hesitate a bit. Reactions? comments?

I like it a lot, but your "enough crappy albums by them" comment tells me you won't like it.

I don't think any of their albums are crappy. Some are much better than others, but none crappy.

crappy is a poor term. but the only albums that have ever really warranted repeated listening with me are the s/t (which is probably one of my favorite albums ever) and Why Do Birds Sing, which grew on my over the course of a roommate. It's not that I avidly dislike their other albums, they just strike me as kinda bland.

My likings, best to "pretty good"

1. Hallowed Ground
2. 3
3. The Blind Leading The Naked
4. Violent Femmes
5.Freak Magnet
6.Viva Wisconsin
7.Why Do Birds Sing

But FM is more full-band, fleshed-out songs than earlier Femmes. It's amped up and not so "cute."

Damn, I forgot New Times, but that's probably because I haven't been able to find my copy for awhile. It's around somewhere. Probably a box in the cellar from the last move.

Not my favorite by a long stretch as I recall, though.

I've never owned Rock!!! (or however many exclamations there are). Does anyone have that one?

This is good news. I only own their first two but I love them both to death. I was afraid if I went further they'd start to suck.

But I'll take your word as gospel for the time being.

New Times isn't all that thrilling, but it's still worth hearing.

I still listen to 3 fairly often. Gano's solo album with all the guest singers on it was interesting. Keep meaning to buy it.
