I don't have an iPod, but this might be useful to some of you.

From Popular Mechanics.

Want to back up your iPod without using iTunes? Connect the iPod to your PC. Open any window and select Folder Options from the Tools menu. In the View tab, check "Show hidden files and folders." Go to My Computer and double-click your iPod. Now you can see a folder called iPod_Control. Double-click it. Select the Music folder, and drag & drop it onto your hard drive. Make sure you have enough space on your drive to accommodate the files.

Aside: Is there really such a thing as a popular mechanic?

I just backed up my library onto DVDs using iTunes. Is there a reason folks don't want to use iTunes? It was easy and relatively fast for me.

I seem to recall looking in that folder one time and seeing hundreds of randomly named folders with names that consisted of letters and numbers, inside of which would be one song. They must mean a true back-up and not something you can use to retrieve music from an Ipod, because there are plenty of programs to do that.

Yup, I have an Athlon X2 processor, and Itunes doesn't like that at all. It spawns multiple threads for a bunch of batch tasks, and eventually two of them close at the same time and crash the application without any useful diagnostic message. It took me 4 days and a reinstall of windows to figure out what was going on.

I also don't like the way that it stores everything in the Ipod's music folder with randomized mp3 names. This makes it a PTIA to move stuff off your ipod to a different machine. Sketch told me of an app called anapod explorer that seems to offer a great deal more functionality than itunes, (albeit for 25 bucks) that I'm going to check out.

If this is the first time someone had this idea, that's sad.
