Is this the dude Ben Chasny was talking about in that PF interview?
I'm downloading these now.
Different beast, though ridiculously similar in capabilities and offerings if not in execution. This guy is one of the five or so Scandanavian organic noise/folk artists that are worth the hype. His minimal type stuff is brilliant but has popped up on tracks from the likes of
Kemalliset Ystavat and absolutely stole the show. On all his self titled he plays everything and shows just an interesting ear for simple layering. Seriously, his Unfolding Emptiness album is a top 20 of all time for me.
The dude from the Chasny interview,
Keiji Haino, is certainly similar as far as the role he has played to advance and open doors for Japanese psych as Keijo has done in the Scandanavian countries. Haino has been rumbling around the Japanese avant scene for ten+ years now lending his hand to everyone from
UZu and
Acid Mothers to recently
Boris (which is a killer collaboration). Same basic thing though, the guy has the ability to play everything but his guitar legitimately makes him special. If you could listen to only the strongest parts of Chasny's electric work you would get an idea of what Haino is like. Not to mention, as that interview hinted at, the guy just radiates cool.
If anyone's interested (as I've noticed a surprising amount of love for Boris on here as of late) I can gladly YSI that record he did with them.
