Roky Erickson - "I Think Of Demons"

I've been trying so hard to find other stuff that Duane Asliksen has played on, but to no avail. His leads are simply perfect. This being the prime example.

With a description like that... I have no choice.

I figured you'd respond.
:D
The playing isn't quite virtuosic -- just perfect and quite lyrical.
It's like this on the whole damn record, but I think this is the very best example.

Or just about any song from Television, for that matter.
Although, with "Marquee Moon", I tend to think of it as a whole-band effort: the guitars intertwine, sure but then so does the rhythm section. (The bass is locked in with the kick, while the snare locks with one guitar and the high-hat with the other.) It's a beautiful thing.

Interesting. He's playing through a tiny amp, probably a single ten, with something like a tube screamer in front of it, and definately humbuckers. Reminds me a lot of of Carl Jah's tone from Dread Zeppelin. His m.o. was to put a fender champ on a stool behind him on stage, run through an old-school Boss DS-1 distortion pedal (the orange one), and mic the shit out of it. A very tight, controlled, focused sound.

That's a pretty apt description.

And thanks, now I have that song in my head.

So.. what did you htink of the playing?
I happen to like the tone, too. But I think the part is goddamn perfect.

The playing is good. There are no surprises, but he does those parts well. I also feel like the part makes the song better than it would be otherwise, for sure. But I don't much like the song, aside from the guitar, so it has nowhere to go but up.

He's very clean, but not "studio pro" clean, which is a good thing. I can't stand it when the guitar could've been a keyboard. He sounds like he has the ability to more or less do what he wants, and when coupled with good taste, that means he can have a really big effect on a band.

Say it aint so by weezer is a song like that. with the mellow jazzy verses that lead into the heavy chorus and ends up with a very lyrical solo.

The guitar is great in that song.
But I think that the hook is strong enough that it's not ONLY about the guitar.
In fact, I think it's all about that enormous hook.
But that's just my opinion.
And I could be wrong.
