Looking to pick up a couple with a Best Buy gift card. I started playing guitar not too long ago, so I'm kind of looking for something in that vein...acoustic stuff.

I'm thinking seriously about the David Gilmour 2002 release, so maybe something along those lines. Can be seen here:

Heartworn Highways (Steve Earle, Guy Clarke, Townes Van Zandt, John Hiatt, etc) might be the sort of thing you're looking for. I haven't seen it yet, but its in my netflix cue. Some of the footage in the Townes doc, Be Here to Love Me, was lifted from it so I'm guessing its pretty great.

Not what you're looking for, but its really great so I'm going to recommend it anyway: Wattstax

Fallen Angel, the doc on Gram Parsons is supposedly finally coming out on DVD at the end of Feb. Its been delayed twice already, but I've got my fingers crossed.

Grateful Dawg is excellent.

Yeah, I've got that already, I guess looking for stuff similar. Funny you mention it though, that's actually what got me on the guitar kick in the first place. I'm liking the suggestions so far...but even if it's different than what I've requested I'm open to that too. Keep 'em coming!

One of the best things I've ever seen anyone do on an acoustic was in that old Jimi Hendrix documentary from the 70's, where everyone is in it and everyone looks like shit warmed over (clapton -faaat, mick -gaaaaay, lou reed-???, little richard -wearing a blue jumpsuit, etc). Jimi sits on a stool and plays Hear My Train a-Comin' on a 12-string, gets nervous after the intro, stops, then does a completely different intro and gets through it. That got me motivated way back when.

is that the one where little richards says that Jimi's playing made his "big toe just curl up in my boot"?

"He made m' big toe shoot up in mah boot," and yes. Also the bit about "bein put in the big dipper, and poured back on da world," and the pronunciation of heroin as "hair-run." Classic.

I might sound like a total dork (that's okay, I'm used to it) but Ned's Atomic Dustbin's Shoot the Neds! is a hell of a lot of fun to watch.

Am I the only Obner that still listens to these guys?

You should check out some of those Sessions At West 54th disks -- sounds like your cuppa. I've seen the Neil Finn episode on TV once.

Peter Gabriel's Growing Up DVD is good. It's not acoustic rock or anything, but still worth checking out.

I've heard very good things about NIN's last DVD. Apparently they threw a ton of money into the production and it shows.
