Aw yeah! You knew my town would top the list! Keep in mind, they are measuring population by a defined metro boundary, so the numbers may seem lower than what you were expecting. This article was pulled from the March 06 issue of Bicycling magazine.

Madison, #1 in its size group. I had zero doubt about this before opening.

philly is # 1 for getting hit by cars when you're on a bike. and then getting yelled at for it.

i need to get a new bike this summer too. i borrowed a couple times last year and it made me want to do it way more often. on a 90° day last summer, i biked 45 blocks and then stood around at an outdoor show for about 8 hours before going back home. and it felt so good. i work across the street from the millennium park bike station, but found out last week that i will probably not have this job by march. what a wasted opportunity.

No surprises. Portland is the home to numerous bike builders and is definitely a bike place.

Am I wacky, or didn't I read recently that Boston was spending some obscene amount of money to make their bikeways the best in the country.

i wish boulder would learn from a cooler town like portland that if you have a ton of bikers, you NEED bike lanes on the street.

and boulder bikers need to learn that when you are riding in a pack, you should NOT be 4-5 bikes wide and halfway into the my lane.

It happens here too... just that *most* (not all) regular bikers in Portland know to ride single-file. I actually had a scary experience yesterday, riding on a street that does not have a designated bike lane, and horrible gutters along the curb. Luckily it was two lanes of traffic going one way, so most people were able to go around me, but if it'd been heavy, I could see myself getting bumped off the bike. But then, that's why I wear a helmet! (big pet peeve of mine: pro or not, wear a fucking helmet)

No doubt. I always wear one, even if I'm just breezing through to someplace close. On a sidenote, Portland (well, really Oregon in general) is always a place I look for jobs...*sigh*

I thought that Eugene would be there, and was not disappointed. Man, I miss biking there, even though I love the A-TX. I may be spending time there this summer, in which case I will definitely come up to visit you Portlanders.

What kind of job?

side note: I've got a friend who rides pro-- competes in Cat 3 mens-- and he's just like all the other pros you see on tv... never wears a helmet going uphill. I can kinda understand why, but at the same time, when you're training on a Portland city street that is being used by traffic and you're not on the fucking Stelvio Pass in the Giro d'Italia? Wear a helmet.

i want to move to portland so bad. and it would be the easiest transition work-wise as half of my group is in portland already.

alas, my wife insists that when we do move, it will be the opposite direction back to the east coast where both our families are

if gas was as cheap here as it is in Portland, I'd be driving through wildlife preserves. carpooling, of course.

hmm, don't know any people in that arena... I'll ask some of my advertising/pr pals though. Maybe they use people on a regular basis and know of companies looking to hire.

i haven't heard anything about it. even if they did, we'd still have to deal with the total lack of respect bicyclists get from drivers around here.

Pleasant surprise to see Ann Arbor on the list.

I've considered living in most of these cities, yet I don't cycle.

for some reason, i can't get the list to open on my computer. can someone tell me how chicago rates?

oh, and wear a helmet. last year, i was forced into a curb by a jagoff in a car. after flipping over my handlebars (i'm assuming - i blacked out), i landed on my face. had i not been wearing a helmet (which cracked anyway), i would've had a massive head injury so said the paramedics.

riding chicago's lakefront is one of the best rides ever. it gets crowded downtown (naturally), but south of navy pier and north of fullerton are simply gorgeous.

<---Commutes to school via bicycle in downtown Atlanta everyday.

Biking is coming up in Atlanta, but it is still terrible. This will hopefully change as the city continues to revitalize itself.

I am fixing the problem one car at a time. You honk at me, I hock a loogey on your windshield.

Athens, GA I thought might make one of the best small cities. It has gotten rave reviews from several bicycle publications.

Not to preach but everyone who can should consider commuting via bicycle. It is exhilirating, good for you, and great for the envrionment.
