I mean, I shouldn't be surprised with it being Paul Schaeffer and all, but jesus, he really lets it loose. And why is Lovering playing air drums?

Ha. Wow, that was hot otherwise.

Paul Schaeffer is like the retarded midget cousin of Larry David.

I still have that on VHS from back in the day :)

Paul can be a knob sometimes. I've got another performance from an old letterman by the Flat Duo Jets where Paul almost has a coronary trying to keep up. It's hilarious.

I've always liked Sid McGuiness, though. Solid guitar player, understated, always seemed like a likeable guy.

I forgot how the band used to ingratiate themselves into all the numbers - even to the point of Anton Fig refusing to give up the stool. Odd. What was the reason? Too much extra shit to soundcheck? Let's let the professionals handle the songs? What a bizarre way to make your "network television debut." They don't still do this, do they? Maybe with more subtlety?

I like how on Conan you can see the full band rig ready to go for musical guests behind him during the monologue. Especially if it's somebody cool.

The reason is probably because Paul's goofy schlock is just an act. I bet he's an intimidating control freak behind that loungemeister facade.

Lovering is playing air drums to keep the other guy clued in. Fucking garbage. God, I had to turn it off.

Lovering has maracas in hands.
but it still makes no sense why he isn't playing the drums.

He's air drumming instead of real drumming for the same reason that Kim is just standing there instead of playing bass, and that Eric Drew Feldman isn't playing keyboards... the show would only let Frank and Joey actually play their own song.

Because (I would guess) that Paul's a control freak, and because the band was "indie," and thus maybe somehow risky? As in "not polished enough" or some such.

Love Letterman. Love Schaeffer. Thought that was a pretty cool clip.

There's a host of reasons why the band might not have been able to perform, and not any of them are because the Pixies were "too dangerous" for Late Nite.

They're not too dangerous of course, but I'm pretty sure Paul & the show producers didn't know them, and just figured "fuck it."

It's not the pixies. It's Frank and Joey with some other people, and an awful keyboard solo.

I'm pretty sure I saw Kim Deal in that clip too.

Standing next to Dave, not playing bass, yes.

Man, Frank looked not as happy after Paul's outburst.

On the other hand, Letterman looks like a giant to Frank.
Frank looked so much younger, thinner and healthier.

like kim deal's heroin habit.
although she looked pretty healthy there.
