This song has always befuddled me. That has to be an effect on Merritt's voice, right? No human can sing that low.

Some bass singers for Southern Gospel quartets could sing so low it'd rip your ass off and scoot it out the hall.

He can sing pretty damn low... There's definitely some sort of distortion effect on that song, but he may just be belting those notes. When I saw them Dec. 2004, he hit a low Eb, which doesn't sound like much more than a rumble.
