Okay so here is the story. Today the 1SG asked me to prepare the briefing for a upcoming Non-Commissioned Officer Development Program (NCODP) and to come up with a suitable topic for the breifing. I have narrow it down to two, History of the NCO Corps and the enlisted promotion system. I have no don't that I wil be able to put together a quaility presentation on either subject. That part that worries me is the actually presentation of my breifing. I have never been a strong public speaker. The group I will be presenting to will be several hundred NCOs, insubordinates, peers and superiors, include the group CSM (Command Sergeant Major). So I am asking for tips and practice techniques I could use so I do come across as a bumbling, studdering idiot. I have plenty of time to practice as I will not be presenting until April. I'd really like to give a first rate, grade "A" presentation, so any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Nervously yours,
mmmmmike

Practice the hell out of it, in front of people. A mirror is not sufficient.

I think rule of thumb is 3-5 mins per slide, keep that in mind.

Visuals are much better than words, try to stay away from slides full of words.

Try to work a joke into the presentation early, even a small one, as it will put your audience at ease and you will gain confidence.

Think of them sitting there in their underwear.

All great tips. Mirror isn't ideal but a good start. If you know if you're presenting with anybody else, maybe organize practice runs.

My friend was telling me that the average NCO knows less about pretty much everything than your typical private.

Why am I not surprised at this statement and source?

Keep bucking, boy. You'll throw that authority off eventually.
