does anyone really care? one quick question though - how in the fuck does Crash get nominated for best picture? That was one of the most formulaic pieces of trite shit that I have seen in quite some time. And I usually like stuff like that.

THoughts?

Glad to see Terrence Howard nominated for "Hustle and Flow," even though he probably won't win.

Yeah, it's probably a two-man race between Hoffman and Ledger, but it was nice to see Terrence get nominated.

Also, how cool is it that one of the songs up for best original song is "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp". Sweet.

I think a nomination for David Strathairn is long overdue.

It's a giant Hollywood circle jerk. That's dignity?

I read that Crash had a major push campaign in the last few months. That's usually good for picking up 1 or 2 noms, particularly if you're pitching a product that appeals to "Hollywood liberal values" and the like.

Or people really like Matt Dillon?

I haven't been out to see a movie but maybe twice this year. Hoorah for being cash-strapped.

One of the least-interesting lists I've seen in a while.
Everything is an "Important Film."
No real surprises.
But yes, there is some semblance of dignity which is long overdue.

Well, utilizing my strategy for last year's Oscar pool (When in doubt, vote for Ray) I think this year is even easier to pick: Brokebutt takes all. I think Witherspoon MAY have a chance as best actress, but other than that, its all Man-Love all the time.

Not that there's anyting wrong with that.

does anyone else think william hurt has a chance at getting best supporting for his small role in a history of violence? anthony quinn wasn't onscreen for ten minutes and won best supporting actor for lust for life.

of course it is. all awards shows are. im saying that if there was a musical equivalent of copote and phillip seymour hoffman, would he be nominated for a grammy? of course not.

I saw this months ago. Horrible.

I feel the same way about the new Woody Allen film, but for different reasons.

I find it kinda predictable that a movie that could cause so much trouble along ideological lines in terms of your views along the spectrum on homosexualism, same-sex marriage, etc. automatically becomes the front-runner for excellence in hollywood. It's like they are doing this just to see the ratings spike, and to show they are not some old-fashioned institution based on christian values, like say the Republican party. Is it fair that this movie gets special treatment, because of the political climate of the times it was released in? No friggin way is that fair.

Bareback and Walk are nominated in nearly every category.

Doing a quick once-over, I don't think there's a single film in any category that I've had any interest at all in seeing.

Wait, there's one nomination each for Junebug, Howl's Moving Castle, and Squid And The Whale.

Is there a serious lack in the genre, or is it just really difficult for comedies to be nominated for Best Picture? The Producers isn't nominated for anything.

It just seems like the Best Picture nominees are always "breaking barriers" (see: Mountain) or based on a true story (see: Capote, Munich). They're always these three hour long intense dramas.

See. I knew this would happen. Why can't you people just celebrate Greg Louganis and be happy?

I hated Capote... thought he was a hack and a creep. I hate Seymour... I'll never see this movie (not that I have anything against fairies... ).

Howard was the best actor last year. That was such a strong little cartoon of a film... mellow dramatic.

I do think gay people need to actually portray gay people once in a while -- for a change of pace, if nothing else -- so I'm rooting for Brokeback Mountain.

Otherwise, no, don't care about most of the major awards. Do care about best animated short and long (Miyazaki against Park! OMG, how am I going to decide?!?...oh, wait, I don't have a vote...never mind...), special effects, music, sound editing, etc.

I'm rooting for Hoffman because I look like him. I always used it as a point of reference for meeting obners for the first time (only worked for e-stone I think). I could leverage it now because now people will actually know who I'm talking about.

Of course, now I can just say "you know, the bad guy in MI3." *sigh*

Seymour's a star now. That's funny. Moving from being the guest on Charlie Rose to Kelly Ripa going "Oh, I love him! He's so GOOD!" (perky squeal)

Funny. But at least it's true.

okay, question to those of you who have seen Brokeback:

a friend of mine (who has NOT seen the movie either) told me there is a scene where one of the actors licks his hand to help out with, er, lubrication. Is this true?
