I've listened to his stuff for awhile and am familiar with the more "popular" albums. I have the following in some format:

Decade
Everyone Knows This is Nowhere
Harvest
After The Gold Rush
Ragged Glory
Unplugged
Prairie Wind

This is a small chunk considering how freakin' huge the man's body of work really is. Where should I look from here? I'm probbaly more in the laid back folky side camp but not opposed to the raw and loud stuff either.

EDIT

I read it wrong. I thought we were choosing from the ones you provided.

You defintely need Tonight's the Night. On the Beach is great but I'm not as enthusiastic about it as everyone else. But you defintely can't go wrong with it.

"Tonight's The Night" and "On The Beach", perhaps. You'd probably like "Silver & Gold" and "Harvest Moon".

The s/t debut is pretty damn good.
and, if you like the laid-back Neil...
Harvest Moon is a stunner.

^Absolute priority.

And after that, Rust Never Sleeps and possibly American Stars and Bars.

I love Stars and Bars but I thought most people didn't.

It's scattershot, but it has some essential songs.

I do enjoy it as a whole.

Tonight's the Night
On the Beach
Harvest Moon
Rust Never Sleeps

The first two are two of his best and essential to have. Tonight's the Night is one of my favourite albums of all time.

I agree with Jewels. Except that these two are probably both my favorites, if you have them or not.

The self-titled?

It's not all Neil, but I'd also throw out Buffalo Springfield Again.

Yeah Jewels is right. And Zuma is tied for my #1 with Harvest. On the Beach would be probably fall somewhere in the top 5.

Where would you guys START with Neil Young, if you didn't, hypothetically, have any of his albums?

Is nobody gonna mention Freedom?!?!? Sure, his '70s-era recordings are all undeniable classics, but I think that's one which should also be taken into consideration.

Pick up "Decade" and see what you think.

Everything mentioned here is great though. I'll throw out "Silver and Gold" as well from his more recent releases. I've always really liked that album

After the Goldrush
Tonight's the Night
Zuma
On the Beach (my favorite)
Harvest

My top 3:

1. Harvest/Zuma (tie)
3. After the Goldrush

but really its hard for me to imagine not owning

Everyone Knows This is Nowhere
On the Beach
Tonight's the Night

also. I'd start with one of the top 3 though. Zuma if you want it to rock more, Harvest or After the Goldrush if you don't.
