Who are the musicians that give you the most with a limited amount of chops? Songwriters are a separate category... I'm speaking strictly performace here.

Bass: Peter Hook
Guitar: Ira Kaplan
Vocalist: Jeff Mangum

Do we include you because of spelling errors?

You calling her a turd?

If you like Astrud, you need to hear Doris Monteiro. So much better IMHO.

Greg Dulli: rarely on key (especially live); gots the mojo.
Louis Prima: kinda a clown; cool-as-shit.

I've heard lots of people blast Paul Simonon from the Clash. I think he's great.

And you know, Miles and Billie Holiday had pretty limited tools, but
changed music as we know it.

Just out of curiosity, what puts Britt Daniel on the list? Voice? Musical ability?

I mean, he plays pretty much every instrument except drums on his albums and has a great voice? I don't mean to be contrary, but are we saying that he's just mediocre at those instruments?

i think its because all of his stuff is pretty minimal. i've read him say in an interview that he can barely play guitar, and the drum parts aren't anything to write home about. but somehow it all forms a delicious popsauce...

Amen. I'm fortunate enough to have seen him live a few times with Stiff Little Fingers. He's a great, if not technically a virtuoso, bass player.

My vote:

Keith Moon

Don't mistake playing minimally for not being a virtuoso. Miles chose to play how he played. It was not due to a lack of skill or ability. He changed music as we know it because of that, not in spite of it.

True that.
He was a student at Julliard for a while, after all.

Nope, Miles was a par-at-best trumpet player. Ditto Wynton Marsalis.

The horn player who gets constantly and undeservedly slagged is Maynard Ferguson.

I look at that picture of The Jam on the back of This is the Modern World; you know the one with Foxton playing that gorgeous Rickenbacker in mid leap and I think..."man I wish I'd seen these guys live during their prime"
