BOSTON (Reuters) - An 18-year-old man opened fire in a Massachusetts' gay bar and attacked patrons with a hatchet, wounding three people, police said on Thursday.

The attack at Puzzles Lounge in New Bedford, a city about 58 miles south of Boston, took place around midnight on Wednesday and was being treated as an apparent hate crime.

Police said the man entered the bar, ordered a drink and asked the bartender if he was in a gay bar. When told that it was, he reached into his coat and pulled out a hatchet and attacked the man next to him.

As patrons attempted to restrain him, he drew a gun and fired several shots, wounding two people, police said.

Two of the wounded were airlifted to a Boston hospital.

The gunman fled. Police later identified him as Jacob Robida, an 18-year-old described as extremely violent. They said he was wanted for three counts of attempted murder and hate crimes related to the attack.

New Bedford was also the scene of another high-profile bar attack -- the 1983 gang rape of a woman whose case inspired the 1988 movie "The Accused" starring Jodie Foster.

If that's not the most obvious way to signal that you're about to commit a hate crime, I'm not sure what is.

When's the last time someone used a hatchet to commit a crime. Points for originality.

I think it's time we bring back the battle ax.

I find it very hard to believe that a gay bar would be named "Puzzles." What happened to the "Blake's" and "Loretta's" of the world?

I'm glad the police had this crucial supplemental information, otherwise we never would have known.

i don't like the idea of a special "hate crime" law.

if you kill someone with full intent, isn't that inherently a "hate crime?"
why do we need a special law for racists and bigots?

why is killing a gay person because you hate them worse than killing your Wife for whatever reason you chose?

it could be that legislators found that people who commit hate crimes are more likely to be deterred by higher penalties than other groups.

Something I have often wondered, and it makes sense, but I was reading something about anti-lynching laws recently, and this was basically the argument against them, as well...

I think that the problem is their application. The NYTimes did a piece in the magazine (can't remember when, exactly) and the main story in the article was about a guy serving 25 to Life after he killed his gay neighbor. Only it had nothing to with him being gay, and everything to do with a property disputer, but when he went over to kick the guy's brains in, he called him a "Fucking Faggot" and that triggered the hate crims clause.

What we really need are effective prosecutors and judges, and clear sentencing GUIDELINES. Mandatory minimums are a fucking travesty as well.

I haven't left the state of Louisiana in several weeks. I've got people that can back this up.

Deterrents to murder have always been a bit of a slippery slope, haven't they Haq?
