Lollapalooza 2006? If I remember correctly only a few went to this last year. They want to outdo last year's. One more day and obviously more bands. It's August 4th-6th in Chicago. Rock!

I'm pretty sure Pitchfork is doing one again too, but I had way more fun in Grant Park than Union Park last year. No offense James.

Chicago in the beginning of August...I can feel the sweat dripping off my body already.

Just read about this a couple hours ago.

They're expanding the whole damn thing to make sure the sound isn't as fucked up like last year.

The city is giving them ALL of Grant Park and then some. There's going to be 8 stages and 130 bands over three days time. Aug 4th-6th.

I'll be watching it from my dad's terrace in our bldg. It's awesome cause you can hear and see most everything from there(wish I'd known that before buying the tickets last year)

I"m giving birth two weeks before this thing. Somehow I'll figure this one out.

And I'm with you Dave, I really like Lolla a lot. Had a great time. Despite the icky heat. I didn't go to Pitchfork's mainly because many of the bands weren't quite up my alley.

august 4th= my birthday. perfect excuse to treat myself to an out of town trip... especially since i've been wanting to visit chicago.

we'll see, got too much other shit going on right now to think that far ahead.

yeah, yeah.

i've heard that there's a permit going through the parks department for intonation (curated by someone else) to be in june and then pitchfork's own festival in late july at union park again.

with the slew of bands (100+ for lollapalooza) planned for these events, will any actually be worthwhile? how many bands can route their tours through chicago at the same? how many bands that these festivals want are even touring during the summer? i have a lot of questions about it and am not sold on any of these outdoor festivals being any good because of the dilution of lineups. that is inevitable.

Actually, they may not be as indiesque as they were at Pitchfork fest(hell I didn't even know of over half those bands) but I think many artists saw how successful Lollapalooza was last year so that'll bring them out for this year.

Announcements are to start being made in about a month they said in the Billboard article. And then they'll keep on going for a couple months with announcements before tickets go on sale.

I'm remaining positive on this.

Trust me, James, I have the same thoughts about the band lineups for Lolla. Before last year I really didn't care for outdoor fests, but those two last year totally made me think again. Intonation was amazing too because of the caliber of acts and so many indie rock/hipsters in one location. But then having Los Amigos Invisibles at Lolla last year was very unique and I doubt they would have been in Chicago if Lolla wasn't taking place. That group was probably my fave last year at Lolla.

Time will tell to see how worthwhile either of these fests will be. I'm with Charli and staying optimistic.

intonation is being curated by vice magazine this year. it's june 24/25 at union park. bloc party and the streets are headlining. i just thought i'd pass that along in this "chicago outdoor festivals" thread.

i thought it was the weekend before lolla? if so, i'm SO tempted to hit up chicago for a week, pending if $ and my job allows it.

the pitchfork festival is the week before lollapalooza. they curated intonation last year and it's now in vice's hands. i guess they had so much fun that they wanted their own festival, though, so that's at the end of july.

breakdown:

intonation: june 24/25
pitchfork: july 29/30
lollapalooza: august 5/6

new adds for intonation.

6/24 - The Streets, The Stills, Lady Sovereign, Boredoms, Jose Gonzalez, Chromeo

6/25 - Bloc Party, Jon Brion, Panthers

that's not too bad. i'm glad i picked up a pre-sale discount ticket now. i'm hoping some other big names are added, though.
