Where I guess part of it is played backwards, like when you run a record backwards.

guitars, cymbals, voices, other sounds...

recorded forward, flipped backward and played, and recorded onto another track.

Example... Give it Away has a backward guitar solo. Another example, Jimi Hendrix, the whole beginning of Have You Ever Been Experienced.

not sure of the ELO song though.

Edit: oh yeah, and hidden messages from bands and the dark lord, although most of that is incidental. You can run a lot of records backwards and it sounds like hidden messages, but it isn't.

according to this website: http://www.wootang.net/backmask/classicrock.html it's either 'Fire on High' or 'Down Home Town'. Both have messages from the dark lord.

Some bands recorded messages in their songs that could only be heard when you played the record backwards. Sometimes, people would play records backwards and swear they heard something. There's supposed to be something in 'Stairway to Heaven' about Satan but I don't remember what it's supposed to say.

Allegedly you can hear the following phrases:

"The Lord turns me off"

"He will give you 666"

About as evil as Elmo. And about as ironic as ferrite.

holy cow, this reminds me of church as a youngster... I used to laugh and laugh when my Sunday School teacher would warn us about the evils of Black Sabbath or the Beatles and all the back-masked messages, and then PROCEED TO PLAY THE TRACK FOR US.
