Do you buy any regularly? I'm down to MOJO and CLASSIC ROCK currently, both British since the good old US seems determined to publish shit music magazines. At least as far as I can tell.

Can you tell me what these magazines are about? I think MAGNET is alternative stuff, right?

Pretty much stopped reading them...Skyscraper seems like it does a good job on keeping up with newer stuff, even though it's a few months past the initial buzz.

If I cared about half of the artists being covered, I'd definitely put more effort into Wire, alas...

edit: also, I've been impressed with the quality of the writing and perspectives in Stop Smiling.

Yeah, Magnet is mostly dedicated to indie artists and is mostly about music with a large reviews section. It covers bands from obscure to well known.

Paste is a bit more mainstream but with good taste IMO. It deals with music mainly but also has articles about movies, culture, etc. It's taste is pretty wide but focuses a lot on singer/songwriters, alt country, and some indie rock. It also publishes short stories occasionally by guest writers and usually has interesting cover stories or interviews. My fave mag these days.

Uncut is serious business. It's expensive, but they cover all the bases.

And you get things like a movie-by-movie retrospective of WALTER HILL.

How this magazine hasn't been shut down, and the publishers jailed, I will never know.

No Depression is OK, if a bit bogged down by the limitations of covering one genre.

I read Spin and Rolling Stone still. Its almost force of habit.

i subscribe to: under the radar, cmj nmm (yes i really do), urb, xlr8r

xlr8r is great for electronic/hip-hop, delves into some indie... urb as well, but lately it's been more on the indie tip.

i really like under the radar- too bad it comes out only quarterly.

i love mojo but goddamn it's pricey.

and lately i've been reading billboard magazine, but that's for work.

filter is like pitchfork in print.

Occasionally, browsing through the book store, I'll pick up Under The Radar, Filter, Uncut, or Harp.

They're all pretty excellent in my opinion.

I would highly recommend Plan B magazine. UK magazine but the distribution is poor outside of London and i have to mail order it. Has Everett True at the helm.

Subscribe to:

Wax Poetics (Rare Groove oriented stuff, funk, soul, jazz, hip hop, etc)
Songlines (World Music)
Magnet

Pick up at the newstand almost every issue:

Global Rhythmn (World Music)
Uncut
Mojo
The Big Takeover (2 issues/Year Alt/Indie)

I'm probably going to drop Magnet when it comes up for renewal unless one of the free cds is one I really want. I may re-up with Harp and No Depression if I can find a free cd I want through the sub.

I pick up every issue of Urb and Scratch.

Depending on the issue, I sometimes pick up Q Magazine.

I subscribe to:

CMJ
Spin

I like the writing of Spin and CMJ best. Magnet is more of a reference source.

I bought it every month for about two years straight. But then I started reading less and less of it. Until finally this month I saw that My Chemical Romance were on the cover as "reader's choice favorite band" and that was the last straw. I couldn't respectfully walk up to the cash register with that.

Yeah, I can't disagree with that sentiment. It doesn't bode well for future purchases.
