the only argument i would even listen to is Sam Cooke, but i personally side with Otis. Something about his voice cuts right to my heart.

Also it doesn't hurt that Booker T and the MG's are amazing.

Dying there doesn't really make him "Madison's Own", does it?

These are my feelings exactly.
It's impossible not to be blown over by him.

If you don't like Otis, something is wrong with you.

And strangely enough, he wasn't all that impressed with his voice. His wife said that he felt like he was getting away with something and that eventually people would call him out as not having much talent.

I can't remember if I have anything by Otis on my Ipod. If not, I'll surely fix that soon.

He was the best. Wilson Pickett is the next best thing for the rough stuff.

Just by coincidence, "Try a Little Tenderness" live from Monterey popped up on my shuffle on the way home - the one where the announcer keeps calling him back and the MG's keep playing the shit out of the climax and Otis just goes batshit - "gotta gotta gotta". It's one of the greatest things ever.

Redding is great, but ill take Sam Cooke, Al Green or Curtis Mayfield over him

I guess I'm in the minority in thinking yes he's one of the greats but just one of many great soul singers and NOT THE GREAT soul singer.

I appresh him more than love him. There's probably 50 or more soul artists I'd rather listen to. I find him technically great but often stylistically not terribly interesting if that makes sense.

in the case of otis, no that makes no sense to my brain.

at this time i'd like to point out that i though otis was just ok when all i had was the Rhino "best of" I don't know what it is about that comp (sequencing? bad mastering?), but it's kind of limp. It wasn't until i heard live at Monterey that i "got it"
