Just heard "Keep Your Hands To Yourself" over the weekend and damn what a great little song. That and "Battleship Chains" both totally knock me on my ass, in the same way as Kings Of Leon.. just excellent, straight-ahead rock.

So, is the rest of that album just as good?
My instincts say yes, but I wanna hear it from those you who actually know the record.

I can probably find it in the bargain bin, somewhere, is my guess.

Yeah, thems was some good 'uns, them GA Satellites. Dan Baird was quite the showman. I give 'em thumbs up! Ever heard the cover of "Battleship Chains" done by Hindu Love Gods (R.E.M. - Stipe + Zevon)?

Damn. The PopTodd and the Yail Bloor meet up.

Do you have that disc Todd? I still have the cover/liner but the disc was stolen at a party many years ago.

I had a cassette copy of it.
Memorex special.
I think it had Drivin' n' Cryin' - Mystery Road on the flip.
Yeah, two ATL bands on the same tape, and it wasn't even intentional.

But it was damn good.

You ever heard D'n'C's "Whisper Tames the Lion," Todd? That one trumps "Mystery Road" in my opinion.

haha. that's like ATL circa 1990 LOL. Throw in the first Black Crowes album and you have the trifecta.

Awesome.

yeah.
And I actually saw them opening for Living Colour when they were touring on that puppy back in '88. That was my first exposure to the band.

All I have still from them these days is Kevn Kinney's first solo record.
And that thing is pretty damn good.

Kevin is a great guy Todd. Used to do a lot of solo stuff in Athens.

I actually like his approach a lot more than most of the Drivin'N'Cryin Stuff.

Plus when he plugs in, He LOUD bubba. Dude brings fucking 6 full stacks to a little gig like the 40 Watt. And it's not like Great White where only one of 'em is plugged in. My fucking pants were waffling in the breeze they put off.

So, is the rest of that album just as good?

No. It's one of the few CDs I've sold back, but granted, it's been close to 20 years since I've heard it. I saw them live 3 times back in the mid- to late-80s (opening for great bands) and never thought they were all that good (even though I do really like "Battleship Chains"). As always, YMMV.

Haven't heard GS albums in years but seem to recall the deeper album cuts were more like Drivin' N' Cryin', which is a good thing, and less like the hillbilly party rock of "Keep Your Hands To Yourself"

For the Georgia Satellites, get their 3rd album In The Land Of Salvation And Sin. It's probably their best, but even that album isn't as good as that first Izzy Stradlin solo album, which featured the Satellite's Rick Richards in the band (but you already knew that). And even THAT album is only kinda middling.

My old band covered songs by both of these bands (surprise). I like Drivin 'N Cryin' much better myself. Couple of very good albums.

This never struck me as the type of band that folks here would like, but then again I'm just going off of "Keep Your Hands to Yourself." I never liked that song much but I always felt a lot of 90s country songs ripped it off to an extent with the way it breaks down to the "and keep your hands to yourself..." part. "God Blessed Texas" by Little Texas..."That's My Story" by Collin Raye...for starters...

Truthfully, I'm pretty clueless about many other things. Like...how to follow assembly instructions, basic mathematics, whether or not my shirt is inside out, etc. I've got a sieve brain for all things practical and a sponge brain for music. Which is why I keep going back to radio after failing at, oh, just about everything else. I always have done other jobs WELL, but my brain hurt while doing them. Music doesn't hurt my brain.

I remember Paul Westerburg and Dan of GA Satellites pondering the idea of swapping bands during the 'mats meltdown. Also remember Dan hanging with Paul on the All Shook Down tour and nailing the Johnette's part on "My Little Problem" live. That was cool.
