I think Baltimore is pretty cool, but I don't live there. Actually, I haven't visited in some time either. That will change once I score some O's tickets, though.

played a show there once
we were supposed to have two shows/two nights in a row

we showed up a day early
and they threw us on to this party they were having

four very tweaked out people watched us
one of them fell asleep
(i didnt think we were that boring)

the next morning we were offered to buy
various stolen items from various homeless people

and we find out our first scheduled show was not actually ever scheduled
and the booking guy said maybe we could get on an open mic the following night

we stuck around
and our van got broken into
tv vcr was still there

all of our noodles and first aid kit were gone
and we had a broken window

so we left that shithole

seriously im scared of that place
but i come from the woods

It costs less to live and die there than in Boston/NYC, right?

I liked Baltimore a lot, but I haven't lived there for about 6 years. So, who knows. I don't think it's quite as cheap relative to other cities as it was in the early to mid 90's, but it also seems to be a more popular place to live now. And I think the city as a whole is rebounding a little. Not growing at the rate of the ridiculous super-rich suburbs around there, but still doing OK. I'm sure there are still plenty of scary neighborhoods, though.

where in Baltimore? it all depends.. traffic into the city from points north/northeast would make Mr Rogers snap...if you want to live in the city there are a couple of ok places- trendy but ok. It doesnt compare to Boston or any real city for that matter... but it may suit your purposes. However, recently (last 10 years) like most areas, housing prices have become ridiculous

No clue what part of town.

Lady KPH got into JHU (Bloomberg) for PhD studies.

It's just a city that's never been very high on my list.

Hmm.

Its a nice enough place to spend a handful of years.. there is enough going on between Baltimore and DC to keep you busy (even NYC is only 3/3.5 hrs by amtrak)

I like this pragmatic way of thinking.

Now if I can just convince myself.

pick up the city paper or check their website..there are a lot of 'creative' types there, although I think they are mostly full of caca.. ok let me know if you have any other questions

I was an intern there about 10+ years ago. I liked it fine. I wasn't 21 though.

We got our car stolen when we went thru there for vacation a few years ago. Woke up from the hotel, and the car was gone. :(

I lived in Fells Point. The drug dealings were high, but the rent was low.

You'd be pretty close to the museums in D.C. Possibly the only upside to Baltimore. That and being close to an airport where you can take a bunch of Nonstop flights.

haha. is that where you are from or currently live?

I just have never really like either Baltimore or D.C., however, I have never lived in either place. My grandfather used to live in Arlington VA and I would go see him a lot, but my view is limited to my visits, never inhabitation.

I think what fu says is largely true. DC is built around being the nation's capital, seat of government, and a tourism destination based on both. Once, you've lived there a few years and done all the cultural touristy things to do, you realize that it doesn't have a whole lot else to do. I like Baltimore more.

Bottom line for KPH:

If you were inclined to move with lady KPH when she goes back to school, you could do far worse than Baltimore. Both Baltimore and DC have a small town feel to them, but between the two of them, there's a fair amount to do especially when you're new to the area. Its placed pretty well on a map and is easy to get to NYC, Philadelphia, and some decent scenic areas for hiking, camping, whitewater rafting, etc. BWI is one of the easiest airports to deal with flying in and out of. I often chose to fly there even when going to DC. The weather is not nearly as cold as new england either.

If you're not into the smaller city charms, you probably won't want to settle down there, but as F4DF says its not a bad place to spend a few years. If you look at other universities your girl is or could be applying to, you could do far worse. You could be moving to Virginia for example. ;)

bluejayway would be the best bet since I think she's right in that area of town.

I've always had fun in Baltimore, barring the time my jackass friends rented a boat and crashed it into someone in the Inner Harbor.

Oh, and when I was 17 I had a good friend's 96 year old grandfather tell me he was going to drive me down to Baltimore and show me all the junkies "who just sit there with their arms like this [palms up, laying in lap] BECAUSE THEY GOT NO BLOOOD LEFT IN THEIR VEINS" He was a spitting image of William S. Burroughs, and that was easily the scariest moment of my life that didn't involve horseshoe crabs.

Cool. Nice points, billy sir.

And yes, Colorado is way high up on my list of desirable places to return to. Alas, their public health schools aren't quite in the same league as zee ole JHU.

I lived in DC for 2 years, 3 years in Delaware, so I'm intimately familar with the mid-Atlantic region. But, I was much younger then, so it helps to hear y'all's perspectives...
