From their self-titled Luaka Bop album of 1998 that I picked up for $1 in the bargain bin at Borders on Michigan Ave.

The whole album is pretty cool. And I had a hard time picking one song.
But... here 'tis.

Enjoy!

I think my screen name tricks people into thinking that pop music is all I listen to. I actually kinda like it that way.

As to the song itself (and the band) I guess I should point out that every damn song on the album is different.

Maybe I'll post another at some time today to illustrate that point. (Depending upon interest.)

But I am glad that you listened.

reminds me.. i FINALLY memorized the local college indie AM station (1190), tuned into the car for the first time and just before my short drive was over, they played a shrimp boat song (which i wasn't able to hear all of). sounded good for what i heard. (don't remember the song title.)

I don't really see where you are coming from with the riyl: the Talking Heads & Oingo Boingo and cafe tacuba only works in the same sense that cheap trick riyl: van halen might work for someone in South America who doesn't speak a lick of english and knows only a handful of US bands. That said, I don't have an riyl to give. Even if I could come up with someone they sounded like, no one here would likely recognize the name. They are Columbian rock...leave it at that.

I saw Bloque about 7 years ago at San Diego Street Scene when they still had a world party stage. That same year, Gilberto Gil, Oliver Mtukudzi, Los Van Van, Cubanismo and others played. I'm still pissed at the organizers for dropping that stage in leiu of more mediocre alt punk, electronica and hip hop. That festival which used to be great is rarely worth going to anymore. Like Todd, I found it for a buck or two used. If you like it, it shouldn't be that hard to find in a bargin bin near you.

Awful is an overstatement. I don't like them much either though and am puzzled too that with all the great latin music available they are one of a small number of bands to find success in the US market. Especially since Cuatro Caminos, which is the album that broke in the US, is the worst thing I've heard from them. I don't think Bloque sounds much at all like Cafe Tacuba though. I'm pretty sure I put a song by them on that world music mix I made you a couple of years ago. I like them though probably not as much as PT does.

I agree. You're just so much more eloquent in your writing. I remember listening to Cuatro Caminos (mind you, after a friend recommended them to me) and it's mindboggling how that album could impress anyone.

I admit to grasping at straws with that RIYL.
I really had no comparison readily at hand.

And, to Cafe Tacuba... I think I like them about as much as you Billy. I like 'em, but don't love 'em. I just had a very strong curiosity about them before I actually heard anything.

But yeah... they're good, not great. (From what I've heard).
