IN a mini review of the new album, Patterson says:
"We're certainly Southern as shit, and we rock. But I've never thought of us as a southern-rock band. We were influenced as much by Wilson Pickett, REM, Big Star, and for that matter, George Carlin."

Any wonder why we love 'em so much?

cool, thanks.
It's taken a few spins, but 'Blessing and a Curse' is really clicking now.

I've finally heard it (thanks, Bloor) and this may be my fave Truckers collection. It's their pop album, ferchrissakes. "Gravity's Gone", "Easy On Yourself", and "Aftermath, USA"? They're all POP songs. And "Daylight" is the first time I've EVER heard a Drive-by Trucker attempt to sing. I mean, really sing. And "Goodbye" has gotta be the first DBT song that Patterson's dad will like. It's got that southern soul thing all over it. I'm not a big fan of the faux wisdom of "A World Of Hurt" (I kinda wish this album ended with "Goddamn Lonely Love" or something equally perfect), but that might change with a few more listens.

I guess if I've got one complaint it's that the DBTs just don't bother with the outright rockers anymore. There's a uniformity of tempo here that is gonna test the patience of a lot of people - and something as rockin' as "Marry Me" could've really improved the flow of this thing.

But overall... holy fuck.

I love WORLD OF HURT, but probably because I can relate to a lot of the stuff he says in the beginning. "Maybe I just don't give advice like that anymore."
I agree that an out and out stomper might make it more palatable, but I am really loving this album.

This + my DBT mix have been in CONSTANT rotation lately. Like many things, their swagger and overall attitude mesh with my worldview so well that I can't NOT love em.

Meanwhile in North Alabama, Patterson Hood Wrote:
"Most of our records have been long and sprawling things that last an hour, no record should last more than an hour... we were shooting for the magical 43min. of Let It Bleed, but we didn't do that, we hit about 46minutes."

That's another thing. For the most part, I appreciate the brevity of this album, but gotdang I wanted that guitar that shreds the end of "Easy On Yourself" to go on for a minute or so rather than fade out after 20 seconds.

Derris and I had a conversation about what would happen if they grabbed for the brass ring of popularity/airplay.

I wonder what the results of that would be..i.e. sound, lyrics, what their now fans would say, etc.

Blue Milk hates it but I love it. I was so excited when they played Daylight at the show last month.
I don't know. They've become one of my favorite bands. They're perfect.

A Blessing and a Curse + The Dirty South = two of my top 20 favorite albums of all time. Cemeterypolka put it best: they're perfect (or at least pretty damn close to it)
