Lately, I have (gasp) been heading down the dangerous path of playing more solos or at the very least, less atmospheric-style guitar. I know that Jazzmasters and the like are used plenty for atmospheric stuff (with a lengthy signal chain), but that they also seem to do a great job for cutting through the mix. Does anyone have any experience with Jazzmasters? It seems like they are exactly the kind of guitar you can really, really, really tweak to get a particular sound...

I've never used one, but I know that Suzanne Somers swears by them.

Jazzercisestastic!

Btw, that's possibly my favorite SOAMFP anything I've seen yet.

Honestly KPH, Jazzmasters were designed for ultra clean playing...though yes, they do cut through and sound decent with effects.

BUYER BEWARE: The bridge piece on jazzmasters are pieces of shit, I own a jaguar which is basically the same thing and it goes out of tune so quickly, especially if you use heavier strings...even if you get the guitar modded. Knock that thing around slightly and you're fucked...and you're gonna spend a shitload on repairs.

But hey, it does that clanky clanky indie rock sound everyone loves so much.

KPH, if you want a nice stock guitar that you can pick up just about anywhere, that handles effects brilliantly, a solid body gretch will do the trick...too much money, danefuckinglectro...$200

Hmm. Yeah, I use 12s as a general rule. I'd actually love to avoid the clanky indie rock sound as much as possible. It sounds great when other people do it, but that's just not my thing.

I snapped the neck on a danelectro (I do lots of bending). I tried a few different Gretch guitars a few months back and the sound didn't seem as bright as I'd hoped and I had trouble keeping them in tune (though these were at stores and using other band's gear).

God, yeah, nooooooo clanky indie rock sound....

dude, totally know the type of sound you're going for, I did this search years ago. I guess we have similar playing styles.

Sure, the easy way to go would be a les paul, SG, strat, tele...but everyone and their mother plays one of those...

I've never tried these, you should look for a local dealer. at least they look cool as fuck.

I've actually given some thought to being the indie rock guy that brings the Les Paul back. Not much thought, though.

I have an SG, but golly does that thing never stay in tune. That's why I got my Rick in the first place, but now that I'm moving closer and closer to (classic) guitar wankery...

Seems like Tweedy has a lot of success with the Jazz and SGs, though he has, you know, money and guitar techs.

You got some coin to spend?

www.specimenproducts.com

EDIT:

This is actually the guy that builds the guitars playing one of 'em:
Falstaff - "Thusly"
http://s52.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3D26 ... 5K5VLQ8SEO

Although they are also used by Archer Prewett, Wilco, and a lot of other (Chicago-based, in particular) indies. Very versitile with the sounds.

Keep in mind, even though jazzmasters have soapbar style pickups, they're still single coil.

And pricey. But someday I'll have a pre-cbs jazzmaster, just watch.

They have an ass load of different sounds in them, I think they're great. Also, possibly check out guitars with P-90 pickups in them, it's a similar sound.

What kind of amp are you running?

yeah, he definitely does...on the more rhythm based tracks...seems like he's rocking the sg or the casino when he does the effects stuff.

not sure how nels cline pulls it off though.

I'd say go with a telecaster because you can completely hot rod and mod those things out and not feel bad about ruining a guitar.

P - I'm using an Orange AD30TC.

Err, this thing:

I mean, a Les Paul would sound great through it.

ANYTHING would sound great through that.

Try a vintage ES-125 TDC through it.

FUCK.

Yeah, it pretty much does what an amp should do, which is replicate the sounds you're trying to make, rather than fucking it up with a particular "sound." It's the cleanest thing I've ever used.

I love orange amps...

of course a les paul would sound great through it...except modern les pauls are built like shit imho.

I hate those things, I will do everything in my power to make sure that no one else buys one.

what's your complete set up now?
