please excuse my computer illiteracy but I need help. I got this 4 or five year old ibook the suits all of my needs however it's full of music ( and there is so much more thats needs to fit on my ipod). I've figured out how to get the tunes to the external but is there a way to run the itunes program from the external. I just don't have enough space to save it all to my library on the desk top.

Anyone?

why don't you just run the iTunes from your iBook, using the external HD as the source for the music library? That's what i do...

My problem is this. Whenever I turn on my external, it has a different drive letter (E: vs. F: vs. I:, etc), and as such, my iTunes doesnt recognize it. Other programs (WinAmp, MediaMonkey, etc.) dont have this problem, but if I want to use iTunes, I have to clear my library and reload the "new" library (a royal pain). Anyone got a solution for this?

Go to the iTunes "Preferences" dialog box, and you'll find an option to change the location where iTunes looks for your music library.

Yeah, Ive tried that but it isnt permanent, i.e. I have to do it every time I turn it on, potentially. Better than the alternative, I suppose.

You'll probably want to transfer the iTunes music folder to the external and NOT the application. the app is not that big and by moving just the app it won't really solve much.

If you do a cmd-N and look in the Music folder or Shared folder you should see the iTunes music folder that contains all the music files. This is the folder you will need to copy to the external. then you will need to change the preferences for iTunes to look to the external for the music files.

We need it too.

Our internet has been down for over 24 hours(we're on this network thingy through our bldg) and the network people claim it's not them.

If we check connections we have an IP address and it says we're connected and firewalled. But nothing. And we've checked all cords etc for a disconnection. Nada.

Right now we're at my work downstairs checking email and such and don't expect to be back up within the next couple days. arrrghh.
