My grandmother, god rest her soul, HATED black people. Yet, she had friends that were black. She was of the mindset that the ones she knew and liked were not like "those people". So, in effect, they were not black anymore. Ah well.

More frightening than anything was in the recent past when my father referred to mexicans as "wetbacks". I wanted to slap him. He said it so nonchalantly.

my grandpa hated everyone who wasn't polish, yet he married a brit and had many, many black friends. when he was dying at the hospital, he had a jewish doctor, a black priest administering communion, and a black female hospice representative. i laughed.

We pretty much don't like anyone who's not Greek. I keep trying to tell my family (about the non-Greek boys I date): I'll talk to them, I'll hang out with them, I'll even have sex with them, but I won't marry them. It then takes them a few seconds to realize that fags can't get married.

This thread just made me think of that song. It's sad to call grandparents "outdated". I wish mine were still around. But yeah, when I my great-uncle used to refer to someone as a "coloured person" it would be pretty awkward/sad.

So...all referces to nationality/ethnic group/religion are out...or only when speaking of Jews? Are any other groups included as another group which isn't allowed to be named?
