To be entirely fair, I don't think I've actually listened to the Black Crowes for just under a decade (outside of the stellar second album, which they keep in the jukebox at the local bar), but damned if these sessions aren't reminding my of why I liked them so much in the first place. These sessions took place between Southern Harmony and Amorica and are the stuff of legend:
Quote:
"Tall" was originally supposed to be the follow album to Southern Harmony, however, the sessions dragged on and on. After a brief break, some songs were re-recorded, some new songs were written and recorded, these songs appeared on the Amorica album. In all honesty, it is completely impossible to determine which songs are from which sessions. Educated guesses based on BMI can be made, however, these are only guesses. Parts of the Tall sessions have appeared in trading circles which were previously thought to be from the Amorica Sessions. As a result, any guesses at this point are futile. As time passes it becomes more clear that the Amorica album is simply a continuation of the Tall album. The band took a break from recording, and returned to the studio with new determination. The product of that return to the studio was the Amorica album. "

Anyways, An Aquarium Drunkard has the entire session here in addition to an entire other lost album here. I have no idea how many other lost albums this band has, but I like both of them more than their last 2 or 3 records put together. I'm pretty sure you'll know by now whether or not you'll enjoy these, but i was pleasantly surprised by them.

I loved their music up to and including most of Amorica, but quickly lost interest after that. Very interested in hearing these sessions.

yeah for me amorica is where it started a pretty sharp descent (though that album has some fucking jams on it). These albums sort of help to explain the drastic change in sound though.

edit they posted more tracks from ANOTHER lost album on that site, in addition to live stuff from the REM reunion(?) and some DBT stuff.

the crowes were always one of those bands where, while i thought that what i heard sucked, I could always see how they could have made some hot jams that i'd just missed.

that's a pretty accurate assessment, I think. I think their first album (with a few exceptions) borders on just aping their influences (Stones vs. Allmans vs Otis Redding), while the second (and to a lesser degree, Amorica) actually start to create a niche for the band and what they were aiming for. The last 3(!?) albums, however, just sound like they did mountains of coke and fought a lot while trying to sound a bit more evolved. Don Was did NOT help this. That's kinda of why I guess I'm enjoying these recordings so much.

That said, I still think both Chris Robinson and Marc Ford are excellent guitar players.

I actually own all their albums. I dug them quite a bit in my 8th grade year, and then quickly forgot about them until college when a few friends got me hooked again, based on boots. I've pulled out their albums once in a great while, but nothing heady. I will however check these out.
