what are we thinking about this? Did he just fall on the sword or was there truly some underlying reason he had to go? I think this is just a last ditch effort to make it seem like Bush is movin' and a shakin' up his staff. And either way, is Card really not gonna be involved in these policy decisions at all now? It seems unlikely.

What's this whole deal with not accepting resignations? If I were to submit my resignation only to be told it weren't accepted, I'd probably reply with, "Well, it sucks to be you, cause my ass is outta here."

Not accepting resignations is supposed to be a noble way for an underling to register discomfiture but for the bossman to look loyal and supportive. Both dudes save face, supposedly.

They always leave anyway.

i just think it's funny that this comes about a week after bush made statements to the effect that there would be no staff shake up. it's his classic pattern: dig in the heels, then quietly do exactly what he said he wouldn't.

i wouldn't exactly call bolten a "shake-up"--if anything the circle has been drawn closer. it's my understanding that he's somewhat of a rove acolyte.

this is true: he's in that circle of Bush's Texas cronies.

Pat Bu was on TV reminiscing about the good old days of the Reagan administration when two dudes would get drunk at lunch and decide to switch jobs with each other.(Jim Baker and Don Regan)
