Simpsons film confirmed for 2007

Twentieth Century Fox has confirmed that popular animated TV series The Simpsons is to be made into a film.

The movie will be released in the United States in July 2007.

A 25-second trailer for the film has been shown to US audiences at screenings of Ice Age: The Meltdown, promising to introduce "the greatest hero in American history".

It then cut to Homer Simpson, wearing only his underwear, who admitted: "I forgot what I was supposed to say."

The Simpsons revolves around the antics of bald, beer-guzzling family man Homer and his spiky-haired son Bart.

International hit

It is the longest-running prime-time entertainment series on television in the US and a worldwide hit.

It is currently in its 17th season, and last month, US network Fox confirmed it had commissioned two more series.

This ensured the show would stay on screens until at least 2008.

There has long been speculation about whether it would be turned into a film.

Creator Matt Groening said last year that the animated hit would keep going as long as he and his colleagues could keep generating fresh ideas.

"That's what you're looking for in television - surprise," he added.

Saw preview for it last night. I was dragged to Ice Age: The Meltdown. It is going to be the simpsons and therefore I must disagree with you Mr. dog on wheels.

I will most likely see this.

They could screw this up by embellishing the visuals with shading and whatnot for the movie screen.

Like new Curious George seems like the real Curious George's half-human cousin.

the beavis and butthead movie did a good job of having really impressive improvements but still staying true to the illustration style.

Hopefully some of the "classic" Simpsons writers (Conan era...hell, maybe even Conan himself) are involved with this on some level. If done right, I think it could be very funny.

Yeah, I doubt Groening and Co. will lay a turd on the big screen. Expect greatness on this one. It's their legacy.

It's just that the show hasn't been decent in years and hasn't been great in many, many years. If this is based on a script that's been around since way back when, maybe. But I don't even watch it on Sunday nights anymore because it became more painful than anything.

according to some interviews that I've read, and commentaries on the DVD boxes, many of the show's best writers will be returning for the movie, along with a few of the better newer ones. I think John Swartzwelder will have a hand in the writing, if that is the case, its gonna fucking rule...he's done the largest number of classic episodes.

Alright, I won't write it off completely yet then.

But I don't see what they can really do for a plot either. It will probably be more like a couple of episodes one after another. Like the 'Who Shot Mr. Burns' two-parter.

Yeah - after the extended and often unrelated openings on the show, the plots end up being, what, fifteen minutes long (after commercials)?

I haven't seen a good Simpson's episode in 5 years. i think it's time to pull the plug.

Maybe they've just been saving up the good writing for the movie. I love the Simpsons but it has been less than stellar for four or five years now.

I really hoe they can do it, but only time's gonna tell here. I remember an interview with someone (Al Jean?) in which a producer pretty much said yeah, the show's been sliding for years but they've been saving a lot of plots/ideas for the movie. this was like 2 years ago.

While the show is but a husk of it's former genius, there's still at least 2-3 gr4eat episodes a season (not including 2 seasons ago), so it's entirely plausible they've got an ace up their sleeve.

god I hope so. Maybe they could convince Oakley/Weinstein and Kogen/Wolodarsky to pitch in as well.

I'm pretty sure I heard Jon Vitti and John Swartzwelder were the 'classic era' Simpson writers than were working on it.

Jon Vitti was probably the best 'story' writer the Simpsons had, something the more recent episodes have lacked badly. The problem with the Simpsons was it turned into a conver belt of jokes with no story ideas.

I also seem to remember Jon Vitti also wrote for some Pixar movies, so it seems logical to bring him in.

I just read the following blurb on aintitcool, whether it's legit or not is unknown:

"All of the original cast, and writers, are involved. The main plot is that a goof by Homer at the power plant results in the government putting a dome over the city limits of Springfield."

that's why last night's episode was fantastic...and not just a scatterbrained montage of jokes.[/quote]
